john_malaise's Full Review: Maroon by Barenaked Ladies
Say What ???
Odd title for a review ???
I thought so ...
Too Little Too Late - 3m 24s
Pretty standard fare for BNL here. This will be one to sing along with at the concerts. The song moves along, the lyrics aren't bad with the usual touch of sarcasm thrown in.
An upbeat song with a great deal of heavy guitar along with the vocals, this song isn't bad, but it's not anything we haven't heard before either.
The lyrics are the only thing that really distinguishes this from a half dozen other BNL songs.
Lyrical Highlight - "This time isn't hell, last time I couldn't tell".
Never Do Anything - 3m 51s
Things get a bit better with this song, although I have to admit that I almost didn't get through the first ten seconds to realize it!
The song starts out with a bunch of helter-skelter keyboard and guitar that sounds just about as good as scraping nails down a chalk board.
Fortunately, once you get PAST that first intro, what you end up is a catchy tune that's "bouncy". In fact, this is a GREAT song. The lyrics deal with a person's lack of motivation to do anything. Sounds all to much like myself!
Pinch Me - 4m 45s
The first single of the CD, this song follows "Never Do Anything" without any let down. With what has become their trademark, what I call "quick lyrics" (lyrics sung REALLY fast), this song has a nice mix of guitar "picking", a background drum beat and great vocals.
A great choice to release first to the world, and a great choice for this CD.
Lyrical Highlight - "I could hide out under there ... I just made you say "Underwear".
Go Home - 2m 43s
Woo Hoo! A song with the word "Flummoxed" in it !!!
What more could you want !!!
A great song that has a sound that could seemingly have been written anytime in the last 35 years. A driving guitar and drum beat push this song through equally driving vocals. Another catchy tune and wonderful lyrics round out everything for another terrific song.
Lyrical Highlight - "If you're flummoxed and your flushed"
FYI:
flum·mox (flmks) v. tr. flum·moxed, flum·mox·ing, flum·mox·es. Informal
To confuse; perplex.
Falling For The First Time - 3m 40s
Play only the first 12 seconds of this song and I swear you'll think that BNL is doing a remake of Hootie and the Blowfish's "Only wanna be with you".
I have to be honest with you ... there is so much of a similarity in the beginning that I have trouble liking the song.
I suppose it's not bad, but it's nothing special. It's my opinion, I'm entitled to it ...
Conventioneers - 3m 43s Sell Sell Sell - 4m 01s
Don't make me say anything about these songs ... Personally I think it's better left unsaid what I think about them ... Yechy !!!
The Humour Of The Situation - 3m 45s
Well, this song is a bit better, though how much I'm not sure.
I suppose it's interesting to note that with the lyrics containing "Caller I.D.", this song wouldn't have made much sense 10 years ago.
I suppose after I listen to this song more, I'll like it more, considering the two before it are so awful.
Baby Seat - 4m 13s
A good "70's" guitar and keyboard intro start out this song.
This is one of them that I enjoy.
Musically this song is great, if you can understand and not be offended by the following lyrics, then you'll love this song.
Lyrical Highlight - "He came down from his retreat
She saw him later on the street
He said "You are the only one
to recognise that I'm the son"
So she bent down and kissed his feet
And that night between the sheets she told him
Off The Hook - 4m 34s
How many things can "Off the hook" refer to ??? Letting someone "off the hook", taking the phone "Off the hook", taking a fish "off the hook" ... have we missed any ??? I don't think BNL did.
Poignant lyrics concerning, emotional dependency make up the main theme of this song, which plays out well both musically and lyrically.
Helicopters - 4m 33s
Par for the course as far as BNL goes, but nothing to write home about.
This song could have come from any of BNL's previous CD's. I'll leave it at that.
Tonight Is The Night I Fell Asleep At The Wheel - Plus the bonus cut which I can't remember the name of an isn't listed on the cover but it plays right after "Tonight ..." - 8m 51s
hmmmm what's this song about ... Someone is driving along to be with someone else, they fall asleep and crash, subsequently they die and proclaim "You're The Last Thing On My Mind" concerning the person they were going to see.
If you like BNL, you're going to like this song, it's a classic.
If you're not a huge fan *shrug*, who knows what you'll think as they sing "I've never seen so much, never seen so much, never seen so much blood".
As for the bonus track which I can't remember the name to ...
This is a quiet, piano driven song with softer, more subtle lyrics ... and it's kinda weird ... what else can I say ...
The wrap on this CD made it sound as if this was a "Limited Edition" CD and that future one's won't have this song on it.
For what it's worth, I THINK the song is called "Hidden Sun", but I can't remember * sigh * ... Maybe you can leave me a comment with the title :)
What Does This All Add Up To ???
If you're a Die Hard Barenaked Ladies Fan, You'll listen to the whole CD, and most likely be impressed with it, this CD is for you.
If you like previous "popular" BNL songs and are thinking about purchasing this CD because you've heard the song "Pinch Me" and like it, then I would guess you'll like about 50-60% of the CD. You could do worse I suppose.
Much like the "Stunt" CD, this one is growing on me more as time goes on. Perhaps you might want to borrow a friends CD for a while ;)
1998 s quadruple-platinum smash Stunt catapulted Barenaked Ladies from alternative favorite to major pop stardom. The colorful Maroon, produced by Don...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
