If you Gotta go to Somerset
Ok, I don't want to get into bashing New Jersey or anything, but the only time I stay in this hotel is when my employer puts me there for business travel. They get a pretty good corporate rate on the room, and don't give me any hassles about the pricey food and drink (but more about that later).
Location
Just off I-287, about 30 minutes from Staten Island, close to various office parks and corporate facilities; New Brunswick (Rutgers) is a short drive away.
Facilities
Pretty much the standard Marriott facilities, with a high-rise stack and an open courtyard with a pool surrounded by 2-story wings.
The standard pool, gym, office facilities are provided, as well as Bar and Restaurant.
Rooms
The coolest rooms are on the ground floor with semi-private patios. Except when you are traveling on business and really need to sleep and a Loud and Boisterous Wedding is going on at poolside.
Otherwise the rooms are Generic Marriott: Comfy beds, OK TV, Nice Shower (with plenty of hot water, which is what I find most desirable).
Furnishings
Bedding, Furniture, Towels and Toiletries are all of good quality and comfort. Towels are 'Marriott Issue': over starched, but thirsty.
Food and Drink
There is the generic hotel bar that is trying to be Hip (and not depressing, as so many are) and the restaurants, which are typically pricey (but since the company specified this place they cannot quibble with the expensive food and drink tab). The drinks are generous, the bartenders and wait staff are friendly. The food is pretty good, plenty of menu choices sure to please your taste buds (but not your wallet).
There are also facilities for business meetings, wedding receptions, etc. These are of the typical and reliable Marriott quality.
Safety and Security
This is a modern facility in a safe suburban area.
Parking lots, hallways, etc. are well-lit.
Room doors have good locks.
Staff
The nice thing about being a semi-regular business traveler is you get to know the staff, and vice-versa. They are genuinely friendly and helpful, and appear to be enjoying their jobs. So for this, they get a plus!
Overall
If you are in Somerset NJ and want a Marriott, well, here it is.
