Pedigree DENTAStix - When you just can't brush every day....

Pros:Helps clean and keep teeth and gums healthy, no mess
Cons:Recommended only for dogs over 22 lbs.
The Bottom Line: Not only are they healthy for her mouth, they keep her out of trouble by giving her something she CAN chew on, keeping her out of stuff!

When we adopted Honey, my Cocker Spaniel, from the shelter shortly before Christmas she had VERY bad teeth. She had been a stray, so they didn't know what kind of care, if any, she had had before we got her.

My mother kept her for me for 3 weeks, since I adopted her from out of state, and it started to become obvious, at least partly, as to why he teeth were so bad. She didn't want dog food. She either wanted the cat's food or people food. She would get into the trash. She would whine and growl (not mean, just to say "hey! I'm over here and I am starving!) when you sat down to eat. If you left your plate, even for a second, chances are it would be empty when you got back. I can't tell you how many meals she has stolen when your back is turned. For such a porky dog she can move fast!

I had purchased Pedigree Dentabone for dogs I had had in the past. I knew that they would help clean her teeth until I could get her into the vet and have them properly cleaned. After pricing them, however, it became obvious that they would quickly become very expensive. My dad went ahead and picked up a package, as well as some Milk-Bone treats, to see if they would help get her by for now.

While at PetSmart buying stuff for Honey before we took her home I saw something new on the shelf. Pedigree DENTAStix were sitting next to the DentaBones. I went ahead and grabbed a bag. I didn't know if she would eat them or not. She loves the DentaBones, so I figured why not? It wasn't much more cost wise than the DentaBones and there were more in the package.

The Pedigree DENTAStix come in a bright blue and yellow bag with a clear patch in the middle so you can see the seven DENTAstix thru the wrapper. They are roughly 5 1/4" long and slightly more than 1/2" wide. They are "X" shaped and tan in color. They are a little soft. There is a recloseable tab on the back of the bag so you can fold the bag closed and keep them from drying out and getting stale. I didn't notice much of an odor. Slightly like a beef flavored treat, maybe?

The Pedigree DENTAStix help reduce tartar and plaque on your dog's teeth as they are eaten. This makes for healthier teeth and gums. The Pedigree DENTAStix gently scrape it away as your dog eats the treat. Honey will eat hers in one sitting, within just a couple of minutes time. There is never any mess left on my carpet, either, as we often have with other treats and bones.

Are her teeth perfect now? No. I would be lying if I said that, but they are a little better. Since they are so bad she has a thing for chewing to help relieve the irritation that a life of no dental care has caused. The Pedigree DENTAStix not only help clean her teeth, but they sooth them, as well, without her finding something else she shouldn't have to chew on, such as one of my son's toys.

Once I get her in for a dental cleaning, roughly $215 in our area, I will continue to use the Pedigree DENTAStix to help keep her teeth clean and healthy. It not only makes a good reward for going outside to potty, but it is also good for her. Can't beat that!
