Pros: Has some extensions of his concepts in the original book. Easy read and good reference.
Cons: Mostly a rewording of earlier work. Quite boring.
The Bottom Line: Too wordy, too boring, too long in getting to the point. Helpful tips for some, but nothing that the original book does not already cover.
claudisea's Full Review: John Gray - Mars and Venus Together Forever: Relat...
When reading the original 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus', I must admit to having gained a few new insights into the general differences between the sexes. This motivated me to read his other works which resulted in me feeling somewhat unsatisfied and put me off the author on the whole.
Firstly I find it unusual that both John Gray and his ex wife have written books on how to have successful relationships..... isn't that a kind of irony? Secondly, I have to be honest and say that knowing many women who rushed to buy his books, it is like drawing blood from a stone to motivate the average man to read them.
Gray has the annoying habit of repeating his advice and in this book it is more habitual than the others. Here, his writing style is like listening to a monotone speaker, it seems to go on and on. It also feels as though he really stereotypes men and women. I found that myself, as a woman, need cave time, but that is supposedly only a male thing. This book is also very wordy in places, it seems to take pages and pages to make one small point.
On the up side it does contain some good extensions of what Gray has aforementioned in his earlier books. I fully believe that all his books have helped people from the brink and brought them back to a place where they can understand and communicate with each other in a more effective manner. Sometimes I wonder what life in the Gray house is life.....it makes me think beginning of the movie 'Pleasantville', where everyone walks with a smile on their face saying the right thing at the right time and the world is surrounded by one massive white picket fence.
Credit is given where it is due, however, and in comparison with many other books of this genre it does well above average. The ideas are simple and the principles effective. John Gray and his wife are Christians and seem to be living their life according to good values, morals and principles. I commend him for trying to pass on his ethics to readers. It is light on the psychobabble and is written in a way that is very easy to understand (almost to the point of patronising at times).
Not one I would often recommend, but it can be helpful for those who have tried other avenues to improve their marital condition, or who really have little idea of communication basics.
