| Prepoia's Full Review: Martha Stewart Everyday Wine Glasses |
Having an established Italian-based home (my husband is from Italy) dictates that wine be served with most meals. My husband and his family actually import grapes and make their own house wine each year. While it is very dry (and not to my limited taste of liking sweet wine) it is a serious subject at our house. His whole family is in on the making, tasting, and enjoyment of their wine. At summer gatherings, when extended Italian families meet and greet and have fun, each family brings a sample of their own (and therefore the best) wine to share.
And that brings us to the subject of wine glasses. Over the years, many people have gifted us with wine glasses. I have (until Christmas of this year) had a set of 6 (6 oz) wine glasses that Ive used. These I had purchased years ago. The problem with old wine glasses is that they have been daily exposed to hard water dishwashing (either by hand or by dishwasher) because we have well water. The scum look is bound to appear sooner or later. Most this size I had found were fine crystal glasses and I knew that not only were they expensive but that they wouldnt hold up during daily use.
The gifts of wine glasses werent used because they are all the really big ones that are easily found in stores. Since I dont drink and my husband only likes a glass with dinner, the glasses held 10 to 14 ounces and were huge and bulky to use. They are lovely but not what we wanted. So I placed on my Christmas list this year an order for 6 ounce wine glasses. My sister took up the challenge; and succeeded somewhat.
The hunt was on and the closest she found of everyday glassware that fit my size requirements were four wine glasses made by the Martha Stewart Company. They are plain glass and hold 7 ounces. They have a nice stem and a somewhat oval head. The glass is a bit thin, but are sturdy enough for dishwashers. She had searched all over but she had never found the exact 6 ounces. I still find these a bit large and they stand up pretty tall for the top rack of the dishwasher but the cost alone makes them nice because they were under ten dollars and can easily be replaced if necessary.
I do like these glasses and would love them if they were an ounce (size does matter in some things) less. It amazed me how much difference in the overall size one ounce can make for height and content. My husband fills the glass about three quarters full and though the top looks a bit big, the wine tastes great.
If you are looking for everyday wine glasses that hold less, not more, and are easy to wash and keep clean then you will enjoy these pretty and inexpensive glasses.
