Pros:I love everything about this guitar, especially the easy playability.

Cons:None

The Bottom Line: This instrument gets a 10 for it beautiful sound. I love the low profile neck.

I had been searching for many years for just the right guitar for my style of playing. I love my Martin D-28,but this guitar is played best when using a pick. I fell in love with this, Martin D-2R the first time I heard it being played. I bought it that day from the man who was playing it. I actually bought a sound and what a sound it has to the ears. Almost, everyone who hears this guitar will ask me where I got the D-28 that sounds so beautiful. I quickly remind them this is a Martin D-2R. This guitar really does look like a D-28. This is a dreadnought steel-stringed acoustic guitar. The guitar can use light or medium steel strings. Dreadnought is the large size body.

The front of the guitar near the tuning gears has the Martin and Co. name written on the wood. The tuning gears are encased and chrome plated. If you look through the sound hole on the neck block you will see the serial number of the guitar. You must look at an angle towards the neck. The model number is stamped above the serial number. All Martins after 1930 have the model number stamped on the neck block. Above the D-2R will have the U.S. patent number. When you look straight down from the sound hole you should see Martin and Co. made in the U.S.A.

The best thing about this guitar is it can be played fingerstyle or pick. It plays either style quite easy. That's the beauty of this instrument. I some times have a hard time deciding which guitar to play.

The main difference is the Martin D-2R is a laminated rosewood back and sides. The D-28 is a solid wood back and sides. The Martin D-2Rhas the dreadnought body, solid spruce top, white binding, the D-28 purfling and rosette. The fingerboard is black micarta. The fingerboard has dot inlays. This guitar has the low neck action. This is great it makes me play faster than ever. The guitar I have is a 1996 and it has an adjustable truss rod.

The guitar has a black micarta bridge, and a black pickguard. It has enclosed chrome tuning gears, and D1 brace pattern. This guitar has the satin finish. I simply love the low profile neck.

The Martin D-2R listed for $1399.00 when it was new. I paid more than what he paid for the guitar. It is very hard to find a good sounding guitar today. If you have ever tried out guitars you may go through several to find the most beautiful sound. This guitar had that one of a kind beautiful guitar sound. The sound is everything. I have found no comparison in sound to this guitar. This guitar projects it's fine quality sound.

TheD-2Rcomes with a Martin deluxe hardshell case. The Martin and Co. name is on the front of the black case. The case protects the guitar very well. This guitar was made at the Martin Guitar Company in Nazareth, Pennsylvania 18064. Also, the factory number is (610)759-2837 for any questions about this instrument.

My final thoughts on the Martin D-2R are what a great experience this guitar has been for me. I have greatly enjoyed playing this guitar. The guitar has given me the sound that I have spent many years searching to find. I would give this guitar a ten for quality ,value and sound.
