Yakisoba Savory Soy Sauce Flavor - Delicious but not for every day!

Written: Jan 14 '11
Pros:Makes a delicious, filling lunch.
Cons:The fat and sodium are ridiculous.
The Bottom Line: The foods I like best are the ones that are the worst for me.  Sigh.

I love soy sauce, pouring it over various rice and noodle dishes, for extra flavor.  I also love long, fat noodles in thick, flavorful sauces.  So deciding to try Muruchan's Yakisoba Noodles in the Savory Soy Sauce Flavor was a no-brainer for me.

This is a line of Japanese-style ramen noodles and veggies.  They make various flavors, all of which come in rectangular bowls, and are supposed to be two servings.  (Yeah, right).  The bowls each contain a brick of noodles and two packets - one for veggies and one for seasoning.  Add the veggies to the noodles, add some water and microwave.  When done, add the seasoning.  No alternate directions are given.  A few minutes later you have a pile of long, fat noodles and veggies covered with a thick sauce.

Note that this product is not intended to be a soup like some other ramen products, but rather a side-dish of noodles, or a meal.  In my case, it's a delicious hot lunch.

This particular flavor does, indeed, taste like soy sauce. Salty?  Yes.  Too salty?  Not for my taste, but I am sure others will find it so.  You can probably try adding less than the full packet of seasoning, to tone down the salty flavor, if this is an issue for you.  As for me, I love it, just the way it is.

What I don't love, though, is the way this product sabotages my diet.   Sadly, this product falls into the "not for everyday use" pile.  Why?  Because I'm not a little kid, so I will consume the entire package for my lunch.  That means I get to double the numbers below (numbers that are already bad enough in their single form).

Each serving contains 260 calories, 11g of fat, and 650mg of sodium.  Now you can see why this product is nothing more than an occasional treat for me.  The fat grams are ridiculous.

As far as ingredients go, the main ones are enriched wheat flour, vegetable oil, dehydrated vegetables (cabbage, corn and carrots) and dehydrated soy sauce.  There is also a mention of "cooked chicken" and "chicken fat".  Despite the fact that there are no visible chicken pieces in this meal, it is not a vegetarian dish.

Long, fat noodles with a thick soy-sauce-flavored sauce?  Yum!  And it sells for less than $1!  Too bad the fat and sodium keep me from being able to eat this one too often.
