Pros: Nice detailing; great articulation for 2-inch figures
Cons: Appearance is not memorable; Wolverine's claws are fused to his hands
The third series of Marvel Minimates shifts its focus onto the X-Men. This isn't a surprise considering the popularity of these mutants. What is surprising is the version of X-Men characters that are produced for this series as the Ultimate Marvel Universe is represented with Ultimate Wolverine and Ultimate Sabretooth.
Ultimate Wolverine is wearing a standard X-Men costume from the Ultimate line. It's mostly blue with yellow trim, in the same vein as Cyclops and Jean Grey. The consistency helps identify them as a team. This Wolverine is a younger looking version than the one people are used to seeing but I don't think he is as recognizable. The reasoning is that he doesn't look like Wolverine at all. He is usually identifiable by the way his hair is styled, which is usually flared out. Instead of having a five o-clock shadow he instead sports a small tuft of hair under his bottom lip. His claws are molded to his hands so they aren't removable, unlike his belt that acts as an accessory piece. In fact if you take away the claws and Wolverine could be any generic X-Men team member.
Ultimate Sabreooth is rendered nicely and is naturally paired with his archenemy. He is more unrecognizable, though, with his long, blond mane and brown trench coat, similar to one Bruce Banner wears. The coat has great detailing, though, when removed from the figure loses its impact. His hands are claw-like that suits the character. This is a great version of Sabretooth that surprises me because it works very well, though he does manage to look like a biker or Triple H from WWE.
Both characters have 14-points of articulation from these incredibly detailed 2" figures. They have incredible movement and more playability than some of the regular sized action figures.
I understand that the Ultimate line is a popular one but there are some characters that lose its iconic look with these new modern interpretations. Sadly, the Ultimate Wolverine and Ultimate Sabretooth two-pack falls under that category. While there is nothing wrong with the way they are both represented, it just doesn't have the same gravitas as these two feel like low key versions of the real thing.
