Pros: Works like they say it does
Cons: Seems expensive but pays for itself
Marvel Mystery Oil
Marvel Mystery Oil is a product that dates back to the 1920s and is produced by a secret formula almost as closely guarded as the recipe for Coca Cola syrup. The old cans were made by Marvel Oil Co and were decorated with some really ornate art deco style calligraphy in red and black that grabbed your eye. Today, the Marvel Mystery Oil is made by Turtle Wax and comes in plastic bottles like most other products. The bottle is red and the label still gives a hint of the hyperbole that used to greet the eye when you picked up a can of Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) back a few years ago.
The claims made for MMO are a bit unbelievable but buyers have been using the additive for about 80 years and some pretty solid hotrodders like Carol Shelby have been known to use Marvel Mystery Oil. The military also uses it in their vehicles but it comes in a plain green can and you can guess that many have become aware of the benefits from using it in the service. The look and smell of the contents of the green government issue can is the same as the commercial product in the red bottle.
The oil is clear red in color and thin with a viscosity of about 5W. It can be used in the crankcase and in the fuel, in both cases as an additive following label directions. The MMO will quiet valve noises like lifters that tick by following the label directions. No more than one quart of the normal crankcase capacity should be replaced by MMO as an oil additive.
In the gasoline, Marvel Mystery Oil should only be added about an ounce for two gallons of gas. In other words, five ounces will treat 10 gallons. MMO was originally introduced in the wooly days before gasoline had much treatment and the MMO provided some badly needed lubrication to the fuel pump and carburetor and cleaned the jets which were known to gum up quite frequently. The MMO also works as a top cylinder lubricant giving the valves and rocker arms some attention. Gas mileage also will get a little better so even though it is relatively expensive it does pay for itself.
Today, the MMO does similarly good things with fuel injection keep the system clean and also acts as a gas preservative similar to Sta-Bil or Sea Foam. Before you shut down your gas powered lawn and garden stuff for the winter, add the right proportion of MMO to the tank and run the motor to make sure it gets distributed throughout the fuel system and drives the old gas out. The gasoline will stay fresh for several months until you fire up the equipment again in spring. This is also for your pet motorcycles, three and four wheel off road vehicles, boat engines, and so on. Marvel Mystery Oil is also recommended as a diesel additive.
You can also use MMO as an air tool lube. MMO can also be used to preserve tools by wiping on a thin coat with a soft rag. It coats the metal and prevents the high humidity of Georgia from causing them to rust up over extended periods of storage. It is also used in coating the chrome on cars simply by wiping on. It prevents pitting and has kept many chrome strips and ornaments pristine over the years.
The quart bottle will set you back about 4 - 5 bucks or so, but with the benefits of less maintenance and better gas mileage and the various uses it's really money in your pocket. Try some Marvel Mystery Oil and see if it doesn't work for you.
