MsHooterville's Full Review: Marvins Magic Drawing Board
Okay, so I like to play with artistic toys now and then. Marvin's Magic Drawing Board looked so easy and creative when I saw it presented last year on QVC.
How do those guys do it? What is different about the Magic Drawing Board they show in a live television studio? Maybe it's the hot lights from above. That's the only explanation I can think of, and that the heat helps melt the sludgy, unyielding black gunk underneath a heavy, dull layer of plastic more pliable.
Why did I buy this toy for myself? Because I had some ideas for "artistic" applications. I thought I might be able to do some funky, abstract drawings or doodles, then scan the result into my computer and manipulate it with photo and art programs. Silly me!
When my package, a plain brown envelope rather than a box, arrived, it was cold outside. I don't know how long the envelope was in the mail truck, but the black sludge was frozen. I think it might still be frozen after all these months.
The T-shaped red plastic drawing tool that Marvin used so effortlessly and fluidly simply would not budge the sludge for me. When I was lucky enough to make a jagged, thin line stay in place for more than a few seconds, all the image revealed was some rather dull primary colors -- not the wild rainbow I had expected.
Marvin effortlessly drew chorus lines, tropical fish, space aliens, flowers and happy faces with his Magic Board on QVC. Why wasn't it working for me? Was it because I'm left handed? Did I get a right-handed drawing tool by mistake?
I was seriously beginning to wonder what was wrong with me, and why I couldn't make this blasted toy make so much as a jagged line.
The primary problem is the stubbornness of the black liquid, which is too thick to make drawing easy for either little people, or big people who like toys. The plastic covering that holds the black tar inside is too heavy and dull to produce the brilliant color that you see on television.
Don't waste your money here, your kids will be frustrated. You will be frustrated. Any child who receives this as a gift will wonder what they did to make you not like them. Just kidding, I'm sure many well-intentioned adults have purchased this board for adored children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews.
But now that you know -- just get them an Etch-A-Sketch or MagnaDoodle instead.
