I have extremely sensitive skin. Once, in high school, my father added fabric softener to a load of laundry. I washed my face with a washcloth from that laundry load, and my face broke out in an itchy, red rash that didn't go away for three weeks. I haven't ever had that bad of a reaction to any facial cleanser, but I do have to be careful about what I put on my face.
I've tried many different products, in the hopes of someday finding a cleanser that will not only nourish the dry areas of my face but tame the oily patches as well, without making me break out into hives. Most of the foaming cleansers I've used in the past have been too drying, and the cream cleansers I've tried didn't leave my skin feeling clean.
Friends of mine would spend small fortunes on skin care lines from Clinique and Estee Lauder, but I couldn't bring myself to pay that much money, and those product lines seemed so INVOLVED. My roommate used Estee Lauder products; it took her about a half an hour to wash her face and two shelves in the medicine cabinet to store all those bottles and jars. I just wanted something SIMPLE.
Then, about a year ago, a friend I worked with told me that she had just become a Mary Kay consultant and invited me to her first Mary Kay party. I wasn't thinking about skin care when I accepted the invitation. I didn't even know that Mary Kay offered skin care products; I just thought that Mary Kay was a cosmetics line. I accepted the invitation to be polite. Quite honestly, I didn't really want to go. I'm not much into make-up, and my image of Mary Kay was that of a cult-like, shady pyramid-scheme company with over-priced products run by a woman who drives a pink car.
Mary Kay, I apologize.
At the party, Christie, my Mary Kay consultant, evaluated my skin type and selected a cleanser for me to try. It was Creamy Cleanser #2, and I haven't used anything else since.
This cleanser can be used on a wet or dry face (I usually use it in the shower). You simply massage it into your skin and either remove it with a damp cloth or rinse it off. It doesn't take any more time to use than if you were to use soap and water, and it even removes make-up, including waterproof mascara.
After using this product for the first time, my skin not only felt clean, but soft and silky smooth, and I noticed an immediate improvement in my skin's appearance. My face looked healthy and radiant.
After using this product for just a couple of weeks, I found that my oily areas were not oily anymore, and I no longer experienced any flaking or itching from dry spots. My skin had become balanced. I didn't need to use as much moisturizer as I used to. My skin had become clearer, too. While I'd never had severe acne, I was prone to the occasional breakout, and usually had some pimple action going on around my hairline and on my forehead. After using this product, my skin had become almost completely free of pimples.
I've been using Mary Kay Creamy Cleanser for just over a year now, and it still works better than anything else I've ever used. My skin is still clear, clean, soft, and smooth. I've never had a single adverse reaction to it. Not a single hive. And for my skin, that's really something.
The cleanser comes in a 6.5 oz. bottle (easy to take with you when travelling), which lasts me about a month or so, depending on whether or not I remember to hide it from my boyfriend (he likes it, too). A little of this product goes a long way; one application is about the size of a nickel in the palm of your hand. It costs $10, which may seem a bit pricey on the surface, but it's only a few dollars more than cleansers made by brands such as Noxzema and Neutrogena, and costs less than those made by brands such as Clinique and Estee Lauder. For as well as it has worked for me, I think it would be cheap at twice its price.
There is no list of ingredients on the bottle or its packaging, though I'm fairly certain that one can be made available upon request from a Mary Kay consultant, should anyone have allergy or sensitivity concerns. My Mary Kay consultant assured me that the cleanser does not contain any dyes or fragrances (these additives have always been a problem for my skin). In any case, Mary Kay products do come with a money back guarantee, so if you do experience any problems or do not like the product for any reason, you can return it for a full refund of the purchase price.
The only negative thing that I can say about this product is that it is only available through a Mary Kay consultant. I'm willing to bet, however, that you'll have no problem finding one if you ask around.
