twenty3skidoo's Full Review: Mary Kay Oil Mattifier
I like to think of myself as low-maintenance. The 15 steps in my beauty routine every morning, however, paint another picture entirely. In my never-ending quest for "the natural look" I find myself constantly in search of some product to get rid of my oily skin without making me seem overly made-up. Usually the results are less than impressive. Face powders seem to cake on my skin and settle into fine lines, and oil-absorbing tissues are a pain to keep up with, and then you have to dispose of them when you're done (sometimes inconvenient!). But if I do nothing, I end up looking like a grease-slick by the end of the day. Enter Mary Kay Oil Mattifier! Finally- the magic I've been looking for!
1. What is it?
Good question. It is a skin-care product designed to absorb oil on your face so that you can be active and wear makeup (or not!) and still look fresh and clean. It costs $15.00 for a .6 ounce tube that will last months. When you buy it, it comes in a relatively small box. Inside the box is a slender white tube, about the size of a tube of mascara, but much softer. The packaging is all white with gray writing on it and a silver twist-off lid. When you remove the lid, the tip of the tube is long and slender. The product inside is white and pearly-looking with the consistency of thin lotion.
2. How do you use it?
The product specifies that it is to be used for oily skin after the "moisture step." After the moisture step is perfect if you are not wearing makeup that day (a trip to the pool for example). If you are planning on wearing makeup, I recommend you wait until after applying foundation before using this product. If you apply it before, it can make the application of your base uneven. But! If you wait until afterwards, and just squeeze out a tiny amount (for me, a blob about half the size of a dime is enough for all of my shine-prone areas) and dab onto your skin where ever you'd like to be shine-free. If you rub gently this product will not affect the evenness of your foundation.
3. Does it work?
Yes! Absolutely! Applying this product in the morning will generally keep me shine-free until about lunch time. The tube is very small and tucks easily into a wallet, purse, or diaper bag, and works great for mid-day touchups. Much better than applying yet another coat of powder or having to blot with a tissue and find a place to put it. You can be discreet and use it anywhere, because you don't even need a mirror. It is quickly absorbed and will not affect the way your makeup looks, so you could use it on the bus or in the bathroom or where ever!
4. Is it easy to use?
Very. As I said, it goes on smoothly and if applied after makeup, it won't ruin anything. The tube is also very sturdy. I carry it everywhere and I have never had it leak, bust, or cause any problems.
5. Can it be used for anything else?
Strangely enough, I have found another amazing use for this product. I know it sounds weird, but it is a great hair product as well. I have very oily hair, and I must wash it every day or it just looks nasty. A while back, on a day when I overslept and didn't have time to take a shower and had to be somewhere, I had a moment of desperation. My hair looked soooo greasy, and I didn't have time to wash it. Instead, I crossed my fingers and applied about a dime-sized amount of the Oil Mattifier in my hand. I worked it into the roots of my hair, and my hair was instantly de-greased! It added a little extra volume at the roots as well, with no stiffness or goopiness. It looked like I had just gotten out of the shower! I was amazed.
6. Is it safe for sensitive skin?
I have extremely sensitive skin, and I have never had any trouble with this unscented formula. Here are the ingredients:
The bottle does specify to avoid direct contact with eyes (although why you would use this in your eyes anyway is a mystery to me!)
7. Overall:
This is truly a great product. While I frown on the inconvenience of dealing with Mary Kay and other brands that are not sold in Wal-Mart, occasionally it is worth it. This stuff really works (on skin and hair!), and while 15 dollars may sound like a lot, it will keep you shine-free for about 3 months or so. This works out to only about 16 cents a day. Well worth it!
