| LILvoyce's Full Review: Mary Kay Sun Essentials Sunless Tanning Lotion |
I live in Florida, and have always had a dream of getting one of those rich dark tans, like you see everyone else, except you, have at the beach. I have tried tanning myself in the sun with out any success. I am not into the whole tanning bed thing. I have seen where people have been to tanning beds, no offense, and they end up looking ten years older than what they really are. Since developing cancer in my early thirties, I have decided that it is not worth me baking myself in the sun anymore. I have had enough baking with all of the cancer treatments that I have had.
My Skin
First off, I would like to say that I have tried most every sunless tanning lotion known to man. I have finally realized, that with my pale skin color, I will never be that rich bronze color that I had always dreamed about. My skin tends to peel and redden in the sun. When I did sun bathe, my tan would only last a few days. It was not worth all of the sunburn pain, and dry skin. With any type of sunless tanning product that I have ever used, if used in excess, my fake tan as I call it, did not look natural at all. I must also say that being on a lot of medications, some contain warnings about limiting my sun exposure.
Now What?
I had decided that I was desperate, and in the beginning of summer I decided to shop around and give these newer Sunless tan products a try. I remember using a sunless tanning lotion when it first came out, and I was just a young girl. I applied that stuff sooooo thick, that when it dried it looked like someone slapped me with a bucket of deep cherry stain. Every since that terrible memory, I had promised myself I would never use another sunless tanning agent again. Well.. I changed my mind.
Which product did I choose?
Out of all of the sunless tanning lotions, and sprays I have, I have narrowed the list down to two products that are my favorite. I will be reviewing one of my favorites now, which happens to be: Mary Kay Sun Essentials, Sunless Tanning Lotion. Yay! Give it up for Mary Kay!
Description of Product
I am not familiar with all the different types of Mary Kay products, except for this bottle that I have purchased a few times now. My bottle of Mary Kay Sun Essentials, Sunless Tanning Lotion, comes in a tube that looks like hand cream. It is white, with purple lettering and a purple twist off cap. On the bottle is an orange dot. I am not sure what the orange dot means. I can tell you that I paid $10 for a 4.5 oz bottle. The lotion itself is white, and is not real thick. If your product has settled for a while, I would recommend shaking this product well, as it WILL separate.
I don't have a regular Mary Kay Saleswoman that visits me. I do have a lady at church who tries to sell me her products in the parking lot...grr. Anyway, I don't mind it to much because I really like this product. I just wish the prices of Mary Kay were not that expensive and she wasn't so pushy, and maybe I would consider ordering something else from her.

Claims
The bottle of Mary Kay, Sun Essentials, Sunless Tanning Lotion claims right on the bottle that:
"Tested for skin irritation and allergy, and is Non-comedogenic. For all skin types."
"Color will develop fully in approximately 6 hours, then you would need to re-apply as needed to maintain tan."
Warnings
I skimmed this from the bottle, so make sure you read all directions, and warnings thoroughly. Basically, it warns that this product does not contain any sunscreen, and you could burn if you are in the sun while wearing this product, and your skin could age more, skin cancer, and other effects even if you do not burn.
Directions
There were a ton, so read them for yourself. I will sum them up for you in a nut shell. Apply to clean skin, taking care around knees, elbows, and ankles. Also, if you apply this to your face it could come out looking uneven. Don't let this product touch anything but your skin for 25 minutes, this would include clothes, hair, whatever. Wash your hands after you use this, and stay out of water for a good hour.
My Experiences
I like the product. It did not give me the deep bronze color I was looking for, but it did give me a natural, light looking tan. This product gave my skin a nice glow. I no longer looked like I was pale. It gave me some color, that I so much needed. I love to use this product in the winter as well. It gives me a lift, and I would rather have a glow than to look pale.
The best way I have found to apply this product, was to let someone else apply it for me. I ask my husband to help me out in this department. If you take your time, and apply this product in stages, instead of all at once with a thick coat, you will be amazed with the result.
I rather, use very thin coats, and work myself up to a color that I can live with. Rather than applying to much, and not being able to show my face to anyone I know. When I have help with applying this product, I don't have to worry about washing my hands after applying. I can have him apply an extremely light coat to the tops of my hands and fingers only.
Pro's
I must say that the Mary Kay Sun Essentials, Sunless Tanning Lotion happens to be one of the most forgiving sunless tan lotions that I have tried. It does not dry fast, so you have time to really work this product into your skin, for a much better natural looking result. I also don't apply much to the elbows, knees, wrists, because even with this product, those areas will tend to darken more than the other areas of skin. If you are patient with this product, then you will receive very welcomed results. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. Take the time to read over the bottle a few times.
I can re-apply this product whenever I need to. Sometimes I wait a day or two, sometimes a wait a bit longer. It works out fine either way.
Con's
Although Mary Kay has one of the better smelling sunless tanning lotions that I have ever smelled, it still has that hint of a funny type smell, as does most of the others. The funny smell, kind of reminds me of bug spray.
If you don't take your time with this product, you could set yourself up for a disaster. TAKE YOUR TIME. Less is better.
One time my husband placed this product on me, he washed his hands so that they did not turn orange. He did not realize that he had bumped my arm and had gotten this product on himself. He noticed the product on his arm six hours later. When they say you have to let this product dry for 25 minutes, and don't touch anything, they mean it.
Overall?
I can't complain. Working with sunless tanning products in general take time, and practice. You will learn through trial and error. I love this product, because I can apply it and it will look natural if I take my time. I can't always say that about other products. I would be a repeat buyer, especially in the winter.
