Yeah, Sordie. Maybe you've not been informed, but academia isn't most famous for fostering independent thought. That place would of course be the federal government.
Glad to see our efforts finally coaxed you out of retirement.

A BRIEF NOTE FROM MR. TUBERCULOSIS (Reply to this comment)
by Sordid-1
Dang howdy! 25% endnotes! The author must have been too busy shaking hands with shorty to inject any independent thought into the book! I wouldn’t know what to think of this book, but with your glowing endorsement of ” Most chapters are extremely dull, others only moderately dull.” I feel obliged to purchase it with all due haste.

Nice job, lya... I had a comment up noting that no one had 'nailed' dede for that comment...and then I saw yours...
Great minds think alike...:-)
I am so sorry that this book did not 'pleasure' you more than it apparently did. As others have already noted, your sacrifice is appreciated...:-)

Thanks, Jan! It's odd, but as far as I recall, circumcision is never mentioned in the book as a preventative for masturbation. But I'm not picking that damn book up again to verify that.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Yes, it's sad, isn't it? A social history of masturbation could have offered so much more. I dimly recall that Reay Tannahill's Sex in History had a chapter on masturbation that put this book to shame. As to this masturbatory Reefer Madness thing Kitty, do you want to direct or do you want a role?

Lynne, personally I kept waiting to hear about it turning black and falling off. I retrospect, I have to agree the researchers must've left a few stones unturned. It's nice to know that my selflessness has not gone unrecognized. Thanks!

Dede, darling, if you want to believe that masturbation is the reason your hands get tied to your bedposts, well, far be it from me to comment. Glad to hear that things are lively with you.

Sundog,
So are you saying that the authors aren't capable of masturbation and that's why they wrote this book? I'm confused.... Help me out here. ; ) LOL
Thanks for your kind words.

Mr. G, I think it's more like all roads lead to Masturbation. Or maybe it's the road to Hell is paved with masturbation?? Whatever... ;)

Don't know about the half.com thing, but I think I could swing a re-sale via Amazon UK. Of course, I persevered with the book because I just knew that my IS from this review would pay off the purchase price in no time. Right?
Thanks for being the first to comment, Grace. Glad you enjoyed the review.

Impressive job. I read about the 1800s hysteria when I researched circumsion. Wasn't that mentioned or was it included in the other tortures performed?

They forgot one! (Reply to this comment)
by Hypotenuse
In the first few chapters of the books we are treated to the hysterical warnings and vitriolic ravings of "physicians" who earnestly believed that masturbation caused every malady from gonorrhea to tuberculosis, blindness, insanity and impotence.
Hairy palms... What kind of researchers were these anyhow? Missed a most important developement. Hrmmph.
Sometimes I find I can't read the personal parts. Reading about the lives these people destroyed hurts.
Very nice review of a very plodding subject. Thank you for your selfless effort to save the world from this book. ;-)

Sex with the one who loves you most (Reply to this comment)

Or something like that.
Interesting and articulate summary of a book that would seem, on first glance, to be of moderate interest to almost anyone. However, it sounds as if the authors managed to strip any vestige of fascination from the topic.
For some reason, I'm reminded of the old saying, "Those who can't do, teach"

Lots of people in your position would have just said, "I'm dropping out. My book was too boring." You are, indeed, a reliable friend.
Are folks in Belgium allowed to sell books through half.com?
:)
Thanks for reviewing one of our poor, previously unreviewed books.
