Pros: Great volume, doesn't require blow-drying, no build-up
Cons: Can run down to ends and make hair crispy, price (though imo it's worth it)
The Bottom Line: It's a great weigh to achieve volume for those of us who normally lack it.

| somuchsofast's Full Review: Matrix Amplify Root Lifter |
Alright, so first a little background info and hair history. I guess I'll start out by saying that I'm a guy(guys use root lifters??) with hair that's about four-five inches long. I have naturally curly hair that for a while I just flat ironed. When I did this I never really had problems with volume, I suppose because I would never completely straighten all of it and some of the curls helped provide much needed lift. Eventually I got my hair chemically straightened - I was horrified. Once I washed it I noticed that I was "blessed" with fine hair that laid flat on my head like paper when it was truly straight. I quickly began to search for solutions, when I came to the matrix line of products.
I'm skeptical as to what the rest of the products do for hair. I tried the moose, I really don't understand the concept nor do I like it. I don't see what a conditioner or shampoo has to do with the volume of my hair, I bought them and tried them, but noticed no serious difference. Basically, don't let anyone convince you that you need the shampoo and conditioner to get the volume you desire. I shampoo with Healthy Sexy Hair/ion moisturizing shampoo (I alternate) and I deep condition with Kerastase masquintense (for fine hair, though I read that the one for thick hair works great on fine hair people as well). That being said, don't buy the rest of the line. Only worry about the root lifter.
So I tried it out, and followed the instructions on the bottle and what many other people said I should use. I applied it to the root area and blow-dried with my head down and making sure I get some extra lift by pulling my hair upwards. WOW! I had spent nights dreading the next day when I would have to face the world with my flat hair, and after using this stuff I couldn't wait to get outside and show my new hair off.
Eventually though, I got tired of hurting my hair with the damaging heat of my blow-drier. So I started just letting my hair air-dry, and I didn't even bother using the root lifter because I thought it wouldn't matter if I don't blow-dry. Well, my hair wasn't as flat as it was before because most of the relaxer (which was seriously weighing my hair down) had washed out, but it was still pretty flat. Eventually I decided I'd try something : apply the root lifter WITHOUT blow-drying.
So here's what I do now : the nozzle of the bottle is really great. I just put it onto my scalp and spritz, move the nozzle around my scalp to spread the root lifter, and move to another area. I do this all around my head pretty much to damp but not wet hair. I made the mistake of doing this on wet hair once and I found that the product dripped all the way to the ends of my hair, making it crispy as if I was using gel (something I hate). People, unless you want crispy hair I recommend you DO NOT use this product as a styling aid. It's not hairspray, it's not gel, it's not a leave-in conditioner, it's a ROOT lifter, designed only for application at the roots.
Moving on, when I do apply it to just damp hair and let it air dry, it still gives me the amazing volume that I get from blow-drying it. I noticed no difference at all. For some time however, I didn't think that the volume was really that great, until I started receiving comments from other guys. Many people have asked me what I do with my hair, and for a while I just told them the basics, like pomade, flat ironing, etc. I never thought that the root lifter was what really made my style. That was, until one day when someone said "that's all you do?" and I told him yes, and then he preceded to tell me that I get really great volume just with pomade and a flat iron. This stuff really IS essential. Last week I even forgot to use this stuff, and I was seriously regretting it. My hair was practically glued flat to my head because of the other styling products in it weighing it down.
Basically, if you want voluminous hair (and I suppose if you have normal-thick hair, big hair) then you really must give this stuff a try. Even with the stuff I put in my hair that would otherwise weigh it down, I still get tremendous volume. I look at my hair in the mirror and think I'm one of those people blessed with thick, plentiful hair. In fact, sometimes I truly believe I am one of those people and debate whether or not I should stop using the root lifter all together! This is truly an amazing product, and I will repurchase again and again.
