Pros: Good for thinner hair
Cons: Doesn't work for people with coarse or thick hair
The Bottom Line: This product is below average for people with thick or coarse hair. I'm sure it would work better on thinner hair.

I’m such a girly-girl. I love getting my nails done. I love going to the salon and getting a new “do”. And I love getting to try all the new products my stylist has to offer me.
When I don’t have a perm, my hair is pretty straight with some wave in it. But it’s very heavy. So heavy it’s hard to keep a style going all day. I like a little “pouf” to my hair. Not big hair necessarily. Just a slightly southern “pouf”. I’ve always had a hard time achieving this. My bangs would fall, and I can forget having hair all one length. That’s just asking for trouble. So my stylist turned me on to a product to solve all my problems.
The Product:
Matrix Amplify Root Lifter is a volumizing system to help your problem areas right at the root. Which in case you didn’t know, is were all your problems start anyway. If you can get those roots to volumize and uplift, then in most cases you’ve solved your styling problem. It gives body and thickness to your root area to help give your style a boost. If you’re not wearing that waif 60’s “do” with your hair slicked down the sides of your head with a part in the middle, then more than likely, you need some root lift.
I did.
You can use it on dry or damp hair. And because of the funky spray pump, you can direct the “lift” to the areas, which need the most lift. At the time I was using this product, it was my bang area. This is not a miracle worker. You need to blow-dry and lift the hair while styling; otherwise, you’ll just have a sticky wet looking mess. Even though Root Lifter is clean and weightless, you do have to “do” something with your hair for it to work.
It comes in an 8.5 oz bottle, and as I mentioned before has a funky nozzle of a sprayer. This sprayer allows you to spray right at the root as it’s got about an inch and a half nozzle on it.
Root Lifter is only sold in professional beauty salons and like all Matrix products, it’s not tested on animals. Root Lift has a very pleasant almost herbal smell to it. I can smell it after I’ve styled my hair; however, it doesn’t interfere with any perfume or body lotion scents that I use.
The ingredients for allergy purposes:
Water, pvp, chitosan, lactic acid, panthenol, wheat amino acids, cocodimonium, hydroxypropyl silk amino acids, hydrolized rice protein, peg-40 hydrogenated castor oil, peg-60 almond glycerides, fragrance, polysorbate 20, methylparaben, dmdm hydanton, phenoxyethanol, fd&c green no.3.
My Experience:
Like I said before, I have really heavy hair. Each individual strand isn’t thick and coarse; I just have a lot of hair. That makes it really hard to have “pouf”. I’ve tried, believe me I have...but it just doesn’t work. I’m sure the root lift is great for people with thinner or less hair than I, but it just didn’t do much for this mop on my head. It doesn’t say anything about particular hair textures or consistencies that this product would work better for. But I’ve found that for thicker, heavier hair, it just doesn’t work.
I really like the smell and I like the “idea” of the product, and I’m sure it works for someone with lighter hair than mine does. But it just isn’t a product for me. My mom on the other hand loves it. She uses it every time she styles her hair and it keeps her style for days! You go mom!
I’m having a hard time deciding how many stars to give this product. Only because I know the product works, it just doesn’t work with my particular hair texture. I do think they need to advertise that more on their bottle though. Because I’m sure people with hair that’s thicker, or more coarse than mine, will have a hard time with this product.
So if you’re having a hard time keeping a style going all day, and you have thinner hair, then check out Matrix Amplifying Root Lifter. If you’ve got thick, coarse hair, don’t bother...you’ll just be wasting ten bucks.
