| msmorvay's Full Review: Mattel BARBIE of Swan Lake KEN As Prince Daniel Do... |
After receiving the Barbie Swan Lake DVD last year shortly before Christmas my daughter of course also wanted the Swan Lake Barbie Doll. Of course if you are going to have that you will need to have a handsome price to go along with her. So she also received Ken as Prince Daniel. Her exact words to me were, "Odette has to have a prince Mom. I can't play with her if she doesn't have a prince". Of course the prince is actually an important part of the story, as you will see below. So if your child knows anything about the ballet Swan Lake, and they plan on actually playing with the Barbie as Odette doll (rather that leaving her in the package as a collectable), they will probably want the prince as well, and I will even go so far as to say they will probably want the Teresa as the Fairy Queen Doll as well, not to mention all of the accessories, but for now lets just talke about Ken as Prince Daniel.
Ken as Prince Daniel
For those of you who dont know the story of Swan Lake I will give you the extremely short version. A beautiful girl by the name of Odette follows a Unicorn in to the forest and she is turned into a swan by an evil fairy queen. While in the forest Prince Daniel sees the swan transform into the beautiful Odette and they fall in love.
So that leaves us with our good friend Ken dressed up like a prince. He is wearing a very royal outfit. The shirt that he wears is light blue in color, and has white puff sleeves that are fitted and blue again towards the bottom of the arm. The material I am certain was meant to look like silk, because that it what it looks like at least to me. The shirt is embellished with several silver diamond shapes, and the sleeves are embellished in silver as well. He also has a white sash that goes over his shirt which is also embellished with silver. The cape that he wears is silver as well. By silver I mean the color not the actual thing.
The pants that he wears are also a silverish grey color and are slightly darker than the embellishments on his shirt. His boots are knee high. They are black in color and are made of cloth. Underneath his clothes he is wearing briefs that are permanently placed and molded to his body.
As for the prince himself he has blond hair and blue eyes, and has a permanent smile on his face showing perfect teeth. The hair is kind of stuck to his head a little too much and looks like it was kind of slick backed with hair gel or something. He is the size of the average Ken doll and I would approximate that he is about 11 or 12 inches in height. Kens head moves from side to side, his arms and legs can be moved up and back, he can twist at the waist and his knees are bendable.
Accessories
Ken as Prince Daniel comes with the cheapest looking plastic crown I have ever seen. It is really just a circular piece of plastic in a dark silver shade, with some design etched in to it. If I saw a prince wearing a crown like this I would have to assume his kingdom was in financial trouble.
In order to make the fairy tail complete so the child can act out the whole scene of when the swan transforms in to Odette there is a swan included in the package with Ken. The swan is very pretty, it has blue eyes and long eyelashes and is wearing an outfit similar to what the Odette Barbie doll wears. The head piece and lacy skirt are very similar.
The Swan Lake Line
The Swan Lake Barbie line came out last year around Christmas time and is a complimentary line to the Barbie Swan Lake DVD that was created in 2003. This line consists of a castle, a unicorn drawn carriage, of course Barbie as Odette, and Teresa as the Fairy Queen. There are also several little children dolls that you can purchase as well. There is also a plush Lila the Unicorn. Of course all of these items are sold separately. There is also an African American version of Swan Lake Barbie available. If your child is extremely gung ho about the Swan Lake line, they can also get life sized Swan Lake Barbie and Teresa Dolls. There are also Swan Lake Barbie styling head dolls. There are also a couple of additional play sets, and there is even a Swan Lake Barbie Board Game.
Final Thoughts
Ken as Prince Daniel is certainly an asset to the Swan Lake Barbie Line. After all what would Odette do with out her prince? He is handsome, and moveable (What more could a woman want in a guy?). His clothing is very prince like and nicely detailed. The hair could have been a bit better, but it is ok. The boots also could have possibly been at least made of plastic, but they look nice anyways. Now the crown is as cheesy as can be and that is all I really have to say about that. The swan the doll comes with is very pretty and adds to the whole theme.
The doll himself is constructed of the same high quality materials that you would expect from Mattel and all of the Barbie dolls made in recent years. He is sturdy and unless he is abused he will last for many years to come.
If your child has Barbie as Odette and would really like to role play the actual Ballet I would recommend that you get Ken as Prince Daniel.
