| JediKermit's Full Review: Mattel Batman the Brave and the Bold Action League... |
My boys and I love the Cartoon Network series Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The cartoon just wrapped its first season, which had Batman teaming up with a different superhero each week, and taking on bad guys from around the world...and beyond. I was sure I would be able to withstand buying any of the Brave and the Bold action figures, because they're bigger than my Justice League Unlimited collection, and they run about eight dollars a piece, and they have these weird sockets that you snap accessories into.
Then I saw the Action League. Taking a page from Hasbro's playbook, the Action League are pairs of mini figures sold for about six dollars. Heavily stylized and streamlined, they're Mattel's answer to the other toy company's Superhero Squad. The two-packs have already shown a wide variety of character selection, and are a fun reward, stocking stuffer, or other small gift.
This particular two-pack features Batman and Red Tornado.
Batman is included in many of the two-packs, of course, but this one is one of the simplest--just a "classic" Batman. He's wearing his grey and blue costume with a yellow and black Bat-logo on his chest and a bright yellow utility belt. The figures are sculpted with oversized hands and almost conical heads; this look fits in well with the cartoony style of the series. Batman's cape wraps around his body, but doesn't interfere with the movement of the figure. These figures only have limited poseability: he's got joints built into his waist, shoulders and neck. This helps them stand up straight (although the pre-posed feet seem to be a bit unsteady), but lets them bust a few dynamic poses. Batman stands about 2.5" tall, and is nearly as wide.
Red Tornado is a robot superhero that Batman's already teamed up with several times on the series. He lacks emotion but not heroism, and is able to generate wind power to fight crime. When his power is "on," he's frequently shown flying, with the lower half of his body enveloped in a red tornado. The figure of Reddy is just about perfect, with his bright red, yellow and blue colors translating perfectly into bright plastic. His torso is mounted on a column of a red tornado, and he's still got poseable arms and a head. Where Batman's face is set in a grimace, Red Tornado has a more blank expression--appropriate for the character.
If you buy any of these two-packs, you'll probably want one with Batman in it, and this is the best. Not an Arctic Parka Batman, or a Day-Glo Raver Batman, but the classic. That he comes with a robot ally is a bonus, and at this price point and for this size, it's a fun way to fill up the toy box. There are already eight assortments of Batman: The Brave and the Bold Action League figures out, including some vehicles and villains, but this is one of the best. You won't go wrong with this set.
