I will never forget my favorite toy. I remember her well. Her name was Drowsy and I took her everywhere. She was blonde with pink and white polka dot pajamas and when you pulled her cord she talked to you.

Wherever I went, Drowsy went. She became worn out and broken so my parents replaced her. The second doll was loved just as much, so much so that her head fell off after a few years. My mom saved that headless doll for years in a box. Ahhh, sweet memories.
Then, a few years ago my mom and I were talking about Drowsy. I visited Ebay and noticed that original Drowsy dolls were selling for nearly $200 and some of them didn't even work anymore. It was at that time that I happened to stumble across something that said Mattel was re-releasing Drowsy doll. My heart skipped a beat. I was so thrilled. I called my mom right away and told her if she saw Drowsy she was not to buy 1, she was to buy 3. Not only did I want Drowsy for my daughters but I wanted her for myself.
I found Drowsy a few weeks later in the local toy store. I remember bringing her home, unwrapping her and holding her for the first time, again! I picked the phone up, dialed my sister and pressed Drowsy's tummy as soon as she answered "I wanna another drink of water", Drowsy said into the phone. My sister just burst into hysterics, "Oh My God, where did you find a Drowsy doll?" I couldn't believe after all these years, she remembered Drowsy as well as I did.
Drowsy is a soft cloth doll. She has a mop of straight blonde hair with a pink bow. Her body is soft with pink pajamas with white polka dots, the neck and wrists of the jammies have white eyelet lace. Her blue eyes are half shut, hey she's drowsy! She looks almost exactly like the 1964 version that I loved so much.
That original version of Drowsy had a pull string. When you pulled it she would talk to you. The new version has a voice box in her tummy, powered by 2 AA batteries, and when you squeeze her she talks to you. She has the sweetest (okay some less sentimental people might say annoying) voice and laugh, it's exactly as I remembered it. She says:
Mommy, I'm sleepy
I want another drink of water
Mommy, kiss me goodnight
I go sleep now, night night
Mommy love baby?
Drowsy is very easy to take care of. Her plastic face and hands can be cleaned with a damp sponge, as can her body. You can change the batteries easily with a Phillips head screwdriver, simply open the closure in the back of the doll and pull out the battery pack. You can brush her hair, but the bow was lost about 1 week after we got her.
I am so glad that Mattel came back with Drowsy when they created the Classic Doll Colletion. It included Mrs. Beasley and Betsy Wetsy. I talked about Drowsy for weeks before I finally found her (she sells for about $14.99) and my husband had no idea just how much I loved and wanted a Drowsy now. I think he might have been a tad annoyed when I slept with her for the first week, but oh well.
I love having my old friend back, but how do my kids like her? Well, as much as it saddens me, they didn't think Drowsy was all that great. She got played with for a couple of weeks and then she found her way to the bottom of the toy box. Not exactly the way to treat your mom's favorite childhood toy, but it's nice they have their own tastes and opinions.
If you had a Drowsy doll now's your chance to have one again. If you didn't, but you want a sweet doll that your child can love and play with...this is the one. Take it from me, my kids have no taste when it comes to Drowsy. LOL. :)
