Up until just a few years ago, my 11 year old daughter Kelsey was infatuated with anything Barbie related. Her collection of dolls currently ranges anywhere from 50 to 75 different models, including her treasured Holiday Barbie series. Packed away at present with all of their matching outfits, shoes, and accessories are also many worn out, heavily played with standard Barbie dolls that she has accumulated over the years. Anytime I needed my daughter to be on her best behavior, all I had to do was threaten to take her well worn collection away and she'd be good as gold for hours on end. Unfortunately, now that Kelsey recently entered middle school and has discovered a world where playing with dolls is no longer "cool", her love for Barbie is, for the most part, a thing of the past. But for Christmas this year, she surprisingly asked for the 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie to add to her growing collection, so of course we could not disappoint her.
~~~The Price~~~
Because of lower quantities and higher demand for the Holiday Barbie in several years past, I picked up my daughter's 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie at our local Wal-Mart several months ago when they first hit the shelves in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. At the time, I willingly paid the full price of $32.86 as I was pleased to find this collector's edition in stock as I had no way of predicting if this years model would become a high demand item. Of course not long after, she could easily be found on sale for less than $30 each. But that was ok with me as the 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie was well worth it. For the look on Kelsey's face Christmas morning told me I made the right choice.
~~~The Packaging~~~
The 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie is packaged in the typical clear plastic rounded packaging in a "half circle" shape so that she can easily be displayed in the original box unopened by collectors. At the top and bottom are durable plastic red pieces with the Barbie logo printed across them. And displayed in front of a red background containing silver stars is the actual doll herself all dressed up and ready to make her entrance to the grand holiday party. For those that choose to remove the 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie from the original box, a doll stand is included so that she can be displayed, touched, and even played with if desired. The silver and red colors chosen for this year's model are quite attractive in my opinion. She is certainly much prettier than some of the Holiday Barbie editions sold in years past.
~~~The Doll~~~
The 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie herself owned by my daughter is the typical blonde model with the unrealistic body type that we hear so much negative press about. Atop her long blonde curls is a silver colored tiara and adorning her ears are two rounded silver earrings that sparkle and shine. She is dressed in a beautiful silver full gown containing stars with a fitted spaghetti strap bodice. The sleeves are see-through with tiny silver dots printed upon them. Her stole is red velvet in appearance, which is bordered by luxurious white fur. Each end of the cape has a shiny silver tassel attached to it as well. A silver necklace with ruby and diamond simulated stones adds the finishing touches to her sparkling holiday look. The 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie with her blue eyes, fair skin, and blonde delicate tendrils is sure to please anyone who desires her traditional features. However, other ethnic models were available in limited quantities as an alternative for those who prefer a doll with darker hair, eyes, and skin.
~~~Play Factor~~~
Without a doubt, the 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie is designed for "looks" only as a collector's item to be displayed and not intended to be played with on a regular basis as many others are. Recommended for ages 6 years and older, there certainly is no set rule that this version of the Holiday Barbie cannot be played with by that special little girl, however, if that is what the consumer desires. Only she is a very expensive choice for every day play as there are countless other less costly models out there that are designed for this purpose instead. What a shame it would be to see the 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie all matted up with her blonde curls chopped to pieces in this ultimate fashion that becomes the fate of many dolls in a young girl's collection. I personally chose to purchase this particular model for her collectible qualities only, which is what the majority of other people decide to do as well. Many of the earlier versions have significantly increased in value, so the potential for this years doll to follow suit is certainly there.
~~~Overall Recommendation~~~
Collectors that have been purchasing the Holiday Barbie version for many years now will not be disappointed in the 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie. She is beautifully dressed in her sparkling silver gown with attractive red stole and looks like Cinderella all dressed up for the ball. Available in larger quantities this year than in years past, I imagine that she can still be found in stores at a moderate price even now that the holiday buying season is over and 2002 is almost upon us. So even if you do not own any of the previous years models, starting a new collection with the 2001 Special Edition Holiday Celebration Barbie is a great choice, for she is the first in what is sure to be many in a new millennium Holiday Barbie line. Containing a limited two year warranty, this high quality durable doll will add sparkle and shine to any collection, no matter how large or small.
Serious collectors should know that the 2001 Holiday Celebration Barbie ornament is available where ever Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments are sold. Perhaps a few can still be found after the holidays at discounted prices.
