Pros: Per my daughter, she comes with a puppy!
Cons: Some of the accessories are very small!
Before I get into the details of the Mattel?s ~ Pet Doctor Barbie, I thought that I would share a quick story with you.
Yesterday I was lurking around in my daughter?s playroom for something to write a review on. When I discovered that Pet Doctor Barbie was listed on Epinions, I quickly grabbed all the items that came with this play set, and brought them down into our computer room. (Yes, I usually do this!) After I picked up my children from school I thought that I would sit down and start compiling my review until I noticed that the puppy was missing. Hmm ... I go upstairs into the playroom where my daughter is playing with her friend and ask her if she took the puppy off of the computer desk. Her response, ?yes Mommy. Sorry, but you had the wrong puppy. Here you go!? and she proceeds to hand me the correct puppy. (Yes, we must have too many puppies to choose from!) To top it off, as she hands it to me she says, ?Now you can write your Epinion!? Hmm, pretty smart little girl I think to myself! All the while I?m wondering what her little friend is thinking of this whole exchange?
~ I?m going to be a Vet someday too Mommy! ~
Yes, I have heard these words many, many times. At the ripe age of six, my daughter has already declared that she is going to be a vet someday. In fact, the other night while watching Miracle Pets on television they were showing a woman who is a traveling Veterinarian, along with housing many unfortunate pets herself. My daughter informed both her Daddy and I that she will one day own a farm so that she can take care of all these animals like this lady does. You know, I really think that one day she may!
So, it should come as no surprise when after Christmas and my daughter spotted Pet Doctor Barbie on sale at KB Toys, she was ecstatic! With the aspirations she has, how could I refuse?
So, what all comes with this Pet Doctor Barbie?
~ Barbie ~ Standing in at nearly 11 ? inches tall, Pet Doctor Barbie comes complete with her white lab coat and black high heeled shoes. Come on now, would a Veterinarian really wear high-heeled black shoes to work on around animals all day? I can tell you from my own experience that it is not what our Veterinarian wears on her feet. Why can?t she wear a sensible pair of tennis shoes? Oh well, Pet Doctor Barbie is cute (as always) and features her long blond hair to her mid back. With her hair parted on the side, she really does have a simple hairstyle.
Now, on to her clothing ? As I mentioned above, she comes complete with her own lab coat made out of a white material which has a texture to it. (It is almost made out of a puffy material with small squares running throughout.) I really like the material of this coat rather than a plain white material. On the front left hand side of this coat is her Barbie Pet Doctor logo stamped on. (Which does not come off. I tried!) There are no pockets are buttons to have to contend with.
Underneath her coat is a bright red top. Well, not just any top. This red top, which is easily velcroed from the back, is sleeveless and stops short above her belly button. So yes, I find myself again wondering why can?t Barbie wear just a regular shirt. You know one that she would tuck into her pants!
Now, I have no complaints with the pants. In fact, I would even wear these. Pet Doctor Barbie is sporting a pair of black Capri pants which also velcro in the back for easy dressing. I love that velcro is used rather than those small snaps that were used before. Not only is it easier for our children to dress Barbie themselves, it is easier on my eyes! On either side of these Capri?s are two slits for some styling details!
~ puppy ~ Measuring in at nearly 2 inches in height, this puppy is made out of tan plastic and looks very similar to a cocker spaniel pup. He/she has the same long droopy ears and black eyes that are very sad, yet sweet looking. He/she is posed in the sitting position just waiting for a treat! This puppy is probably the main reason she chose this Barbie play set. She just loves her animals!
~ food dish ~ A little black plastic food dish is enclosed with this play set. It has a red sticker with black paw prints and white dog bones running throughout. It really is a very cute little dog dish.
~ stethoscope ~ Pet Doctor Barbie is ready to listen to this puppy?s heart and she comes complete with her own stethoscope! Made out of a firmer black plastic this is the only piece in this play set that I have concerns with. It is almost made out of a too firm of plastic because I can picture my daughter twisting the thing in half. Hopefully I am wrong about this!
~ brush ~ The perfect size for a Kelly Doll to hold, or even Barbie herself, is a little black plastic brush. It has a small handle on the top of the brush for Kelly, or Barbie, to place their hand into. This really is more of a decorative item than anything else since the puppy has hair made out of plastic and has no problems with shedding. (Boy! Do I wish that my dog had this type of hair!)
~ ear checker ~ Okay, there probably is a medical term for this piece that I am not aware of, so for now, I will refer to it as the ear checker. This piece is also made out of a black plastic, and is yet another small piece to this set.
~ pet chart ~ This black plastic pet chart is nearly 1 ? inches in height, and comes with a sticker on the front with PET CHART, and a few other items marked on it. For example, the Name, Breed and Weight of the dog are listed. And at the bottom of the chart you will see Veterinarian Barbie'? signature (with a pink dog print next to it).
~ treats ~ A very small cardboard box of Beggin? Strips treats are also included. Measuring in at one inch tall, this small cardboard box of treats has actually held up pretty well. I have experienced other card board cutouts with various Barbie?s and they never tend to stay put together. This box of treats has. I?m impressed!
On the back of the Pet Doctor Barbie box is a cute little letter which is supposably written to the new owner of this little puppy (Pal) from the puppy itself. It goes ~
Remember to fee me
and give me fresh
water every day.
Take me to my DOCTOR.
to keep me healthy.
Be very patient with me
and give me lots of
LOVE and Attention
from the one who
Your pet pal (with his/her pink paw print next to the name)
Well, my daughter really thought that this letter was pretty neat, and she has cut it off of the box to save up in her playroom with all the other zillion Barbie items she has. (Okay, maybe it is not a zillion!) From a parent?s point of view, I think that it is a good learning tool for our girls to learn about how to take care of their pet, and ? to learn a bit more about whom helps to take care of their pet when they are sick. Sure, it is just some silly little letter on the back of a box, but it does deliver a good message. And for a little girl, who loves animals, my daughter heard the message loud and clear!
Pet Doctor Barbie is recommend for children ages three and up. I would presume that this is due a few of the very small accessories included with this play set. Sometimes I hate all of these small pieces but they certainly do provide the entertainment for my daughter. She just loves pretending to take care of her animals. (She has several Barbie pets.)
~ Yes, another Barbie product that is fun to have! ~
While I really do wish that Mattel would dress their Barbie?s in everyday clothing sometimes, I can?t hold the short shirt and high-heeled shoes against this Pet Doctor Barbie. I do have to mention that I would not have been as excited to purchase her for my daughter for the original $14.99 asking price at KB Toys. This Barbie just didn?t come with, as many accessories that I felt were worth the $15.00 price tag. But, for $10.00, I decided why not.
Does my daughter still enjoy playing with her Pet Doctor Barbie? You bet! In fact, if you were to walk into her playroom now you would see many different stations set up for all of her pets. And what is Pet Doctor Barbie doing? Checking on all of her little furry friends, of course!
