| tiffer0220's Full Review: Mattel SpongeBob SquarePants Game |
While shopping for presents this past holiday season, I came across the Mattel SpongeBob SquarePants Game sitting there in the board game aisle. Neither one of my boys had asked for the game and I figured they just didn't know there was such a thing out in the market, so being the good SpongeBob mom, I had to pick it up for them.
What caught my eye right away was that the playing pieces were visible from the box and instead of your boring typical pieces, the playing pieces to this game were the actual characters of SpongeBob Squarepants.
The Game and contents
The SpongeBob SquarePants Game is recommended for ages over 7. There are small pieces so its wise to use caution when wee ones are also in the house.
The game comes with a colorful gameboard, 1 die, 60 small plastic gold coins, a cardboard treasure chest and 2 plastic playing pieces of each of the following: SpongeBob, Squidward, Sandy and Patrick.
The Object
The object of the game is to be the first player to get both of your playing pieces to the Krusty Krab. In order to achieve this, you have to move around the playing board hopping from one bubble to the next following the instructions on each bubble. Instead of squares like other gameboards, this game has bubbles, after all you are under the sea.
There are only 2 squares on the gameboard that will allow you to go to the Krusty Krab, but you must have collected a total of 8 coins per playing piece in order to go there.
Directions
Playing the SpongeBob SquarePants Game is fairly easy. Each player chooses a character and then takes both of the playing pieces of that character. If you were to choose SpongeBob as your character, you'd take both SpongeBobs and place them in the start position on the board, SpongeBobs's start position is the pineapple and Patricks is the rock and so on.
You roll the die and move ahead how ever many spaces the die says. On different turns you can choose to move either playing piece, they both can be in play on the board at the same time. Whats good about having 2 playing pieces out on the board is that in case you had to move ahead 5 and moving piece 1 makes you lose a turn, you can decide to move piece 2 if the bubble it will land on will be more to your advantage.
Since each bubble tell you something different, you could end up losing a turn, rolling again, collecting coins as a reward, losing coins, or even taking coins from other players.
The coins are all neatly stored in a cardboard treasure chest that you put in the middle of the game board. Each time you have to take some or give some back, you just have to reach to the middle of the board. This eliminates the fight of who is going to be the "banker."
Last Minute Thoughts and Overall Recommendations
Since players are supposed to get their own coins and move their own pieces, the game helps the younger siblings with their counting. My 4 year old now has the concept of being able to count by himself and he loves to play this game with his brother because he can count the coins and move his own guy all by himself, and noone has to correct him on it.
The game is more exciting when you play it with 3 or 4 players, since it seems to actually turn into a real race to the Krusty Krab with all the hollering going on. When its just 2 of us playing, the game seems like it just drags on and on.
I would highly recommend the Mattel SpongeBob SquarePants Game for SpongeBob fans regardless of if they are male or female.
