| PALWalrus's Full Review: Matua Valley Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2006 750m... |
This review is not of the wine listed but of the Dog Point Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006. Hopefully one day in the future, in a galaxy far far away this review may be correctly linked
Here Little Doggie...
I love shopping for wines. Whether at the local purveyor of fine wines, or when on holiday at any bottle store or liquor outlet close by. On a recent trip to the Big Easy we stumbled upon a wonderful wine shop called "Vieux Carre Wine" on Chartres. Their selection was very impressive and, as usual, we gravitated to the New Zealand wine selection to see if they had anything new and exciting for us to try. The lovely Linda (my distinctly better half) spotted a little stray in the corner.
Pedigree or Mutt?
This little stray was nothing much to look at. The bottle was very plain. A simple white label which, quite frankly, looked like it had been stuck on the bottle by a three year old. The label simply stated the wine detail and had a simple drawing of a cabbage tree on it. (Funnily enough the cabbage tree is also the symbol of the high school I attended in New Zealand). We had to take this stray home and
see if it is house broken.
Sit...Stay!!!
Having got this puppy home it was time to check it out. As with just about all early drinking New Zealand wines, this one has a screw top. Pouring into the glass the color shows with a light gold color with a tinge of green around the edges. Very light color though. The nose is crisp and fresh, very slightly grassy and gooseberries. Plenty of fruit there too, perhaps melon. First taste is very pleasant indeed. I got guave, gooseberries, melon and perhaps passionfruit with nashi pear. Not too much acid and a very long fruity finish...YUM. The 13.5% alcohol is evident, but with all the fruit is not at all overpowering.
Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone.
All too suddenly this little stray was gone. So where can we get others? We searched the internet and found that this particular wine had scored a 92 and I can totally believe that. We found a couple of sites that would ship to Florida for us. We visited our local fine wine store and they got a case for us at approximately $18 a bottle. If you like fruity Sauv Blancs I highly recommend this one. I would even take this over a Cloudy Bay Sauv Blanc and at about $7 a bottle less it is definitely a bargain. The extra cash you can always donate to the SPCA.
Cheers.
