| leafsbabe01's Full Review: Max Factor Colour Adapt Foundation |
Even after my recent overall satisfaction with Maybelline's newest foundation, it still wasn't perfect. Silly, I know. I mean, will we as women ever find the "perfect" foundation? I don't know. But looking sure can be fun!
A couple months ago I was talking with an online friend of mine from Germany. She had recieved a free sample of Max Factor's Colour Adapt Liquid Foundation and raved about how silky it went on, covering all of her blemishes and lasting for hours. Not a single complaint! Well, I had never really tried Max Factor's products, but I figured why not. I did a search online and could not find anything in North America on it! None of the make-up sites were selling it, and the only ebay auctions were for those in the UK. I figured it just hadn't been released in the U.S. yet. The UK usually gets the first jump on Max Factor products, so it wasn't surprising.
Well, yesterday I was finishing up some Christmas shopping at my local Target and I needed to pick up another foundation. Before heading to the Maybelline section I stopped by Max Factor's and was excited to see the Colour Adapt collection sitting on the shelf!
The CLAIM
Traditional foundations contain pigments that only reflect one colour. Colour Adapt is a breakthrough technology that contains unique colour adapting particles. These particles pick up and reflect the colour of the underlying background, or in this case, your skin.
* Colour Adapt contains more than one colour pigment.
* These pigments adapt to your skins natural colour variations.
* Flawless coverage that fit's your personal colour palette like a glove.
Well from Nat's rave I figured this might just be true! And after examining the color selection I picked up one in the shade Porcelain.
The PACKAGING
Ah! The first thing I noticed about the packaging of Max Factor Colour Adapt Foundation was the pump jar it came in. The jar itself displays a black, white and flesh colored design with a plastic cover to seal off the pump. I'm sure this is going to make me very unpopular for a second here given how many people praise this packaging, but I absolutely hate the pump dispensers of foundation. I either like the wide twist off lid jars that allow you to easily get all of the foundation out, or the glass jars that let you put back what you don't use easily.
In my experience, these pumps also get clogged and this particular foundation's packaging doesn't allow you to unscrew the top to correct this.
I'm not sure if this was just the one I purchased, as I haven't heard any other complaints... but when I go to get my foundation out the next day, some of it occasionally leaks out into the plastic cover!
The SHADES
#40 Creamy Ivory
#50 Porcelain
#55 Blushing Nude
#60 Sand
#70 Natural
$75 Golden
#80 Bronze
The shades are very limited, ranging from very light to very tan. There is not currently a shade that would suit an African American woman.
Selecting the right shade was not easy in the least. One of the things I love about Loreal and some of Maybelline's foundations is that they classify them in skin tones of warm, cool, and neutral. This makes it much easier to select your correct shade with foundations we can not test out in the store. I knew creamy Ivory was far too light for me, so I selected the next one up, Porcelain.
The numbered shade system I find to be flawed as they do not go in order of lightest to darkest... but instead from the lightest warm, neutral and cool tones, so it can be difficult to determine which is best for your tone.
They also claim that as long as the foundation matches ANY tone on your skin that it will blend in well all over.
However, the shade Porcelain was much too light for me. My friend, who has a similar skin tone to me has found natural to be the best, so I will try this one out next.
The INGREDIENTS
CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, GLYERIN, WATER, DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, DIMETHICONE PEG-PPG-18/18 DIMETHICONE, METHICONE, PEG-10 DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, PROPYLPARABEN, ETHYLPARABEN, DISODIUM EDTA, METHYPARABEN, BENZYL ALCOLHOL, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, MICA, IRON OXIDES.
PRICING & AVAILABILITY
A 1 oz jar of Max Factor Color Adapt Foundation sells for around $10.50. It's about the same cost as my maybelline one, with more foundation per jar... SCORE!
There seemed to be a wide selection of the available 6 shades in Target when I stopped in... but I have heard from several people that it can be difficult to find in stores.
The APPLICATION
After shaking the jar up I pressed down on the pump, dispensing a squirt of the foundation and smoothed it over my entire face. Although this is a heavy coverage foundation, the foundation itself is quite light going on. Max Factor Colour Adapt Foundation does indeed go on very smooth, leaving your face feeling silky soft.
Although the color is too light for my skin tone, the coverage is the best I have experienced in a foundation, covering most blemishes, and my acne scarring! I only need to apply minimal concealer to cover what the foundation doesn't. No streaking, lines or anything at all to indicate I was wearing foundation at all. My all over face bronzer brightened up my tone to it's natural color, and I still had that non make-up-y look wish was quite impressive.
OVERALL
I don't know about the "advanced technology" or how accurate any of that is. The product claims that if you match the color to anywhere on your face, including the tone of your neck it will adjust to the rest of your face and not look splotchy. Although it didn't look splotchy, the color was also lighter than my neck.
Even though I'm not fond of the packaging, and the color selection could be better... I will be replacing my Maybelline foundation with Max Factor Colour Adapt Foundation.
The coverage does exceed any foundation I have ever tried, while looking flawless, as if I have no make-up on. I have yet to have to touch up after 2 weeks of use unless I am going out late at night. How it looks at application in the morning hours is how it looks at 6 PM.
Currently, I am rating Max Factor Colour Adapt Foundation 4 stars. The shade selection process is really the only reason for that, should the darker shade work better for me I will edit and change it to 5, as I do love everything else about the product. I am willing to overlook the packaging for something that works so well ;)
