After a decent pair of Sony headphones that had given me hours of music enjoyment broke, I started my quest for a new pair of headphones. I knew that I didn’t want to spend a lot of money and that I wanted them to be sturdy – I drop stuff all the time and even though I’d be only using them at my desk, I wanted to be able to pretty much block out the sounds because I use my headphones predominantly when I’m writing music reviews.
Admittedly, I’m a girl shopper and instead of going to a few places and doing some comparisons – I opted to buy my headphones based on looks and price as opposed to functionality and price. Basing my decisions purely on that I ended up with the Maxell Light Beats (LB-1) Headphones. I have to confess, like an 8-year old I was drawn to the fact that the headphones light up when you listen to your music. I know it’s a trivial thing, but I thought it was nice marketing. Although they are listed in silver here at epinions – I saw them in colors like green, purple, black and opted for the blue pair myself.
- What Went Wrong -
I don’t think I have an abnormally large head, but for some reason this neckband style of headphones just wasn’t very comfortable. I didn’t feel that they rested on my ears the way that I would like and the neckband really annoyed me (I owned another Sony neckband style that I liked). Besides that, the cord length (which isn’t listed on the box) was much to short and I kept feeling like I needed to hold my head back or they would all off.
- The Sound Test -
The sound quality was just average, nothing to write home about. I listened to Natalie Merchant, Vanessa Carlton and Mos Def with these headphones and there isn’t much at all to tell. They were average across the board as far as sound, bass and vocals.
- The Specs-
-Lights flash to the beat of the music.
-Open-Air style.
-Comes with extra batteries for the lights
-Weigh 60 g
-Mylar, 30mm driver, 24 Ohms impedance, 3.5mm Silver plated L-plug
-100 mW maximum input
- Final Thoughts -
Although I fell prey to a marketing scheme – I ended up getting duped. The Maxell’s turned out to be uncomfortable and I couldn’t even see the cute little lights so they didn’t really serve me any purpose. At $11 – I suppose if I were 12 and had a Discman, I would be good to go. But at 23 and using them on a boom box, they just weren’t right for me.
