| computerphile's Full Review: Seagate (ST0153000U) 30.7 GB ATA-66 Hard Drive |
Purchased from Office Max when I needed more space for all my projects. I ran it in an Asus CUSL-2C socket 370 motherboard at ATA66 -- could not get the ATA100 to enable eventhough the mobo supports it. The unit is fairly quite (more so than my 2 Western Digitals), claims to have "DualWave Twin Processors" ...yada yada yada...and extra features- what the box says. When comparing HDs, I found reviews on the web that claimed the Maxtor drive to have a technological lead than the WD at that time. Took it home, used the software included made by Caldera, easy to set up in minimal time. I was able to ghost my drive (for temporary use) with no problems. When I recently purchased (2 weeks ago) a WD 80 Gig ATA100 HD w/ an 8 meg buffer, I looked at my bios and the software to find out that my Maxtor was only running at UMDA 33 (But the WD was at ATA100)....Both correctly set up w/ ATA133 cable, not sharing cables with cd roms either. Hmmm, a couple diagnostic tools and calls to tech support, they are now sending me a NEW hard drive that is the same (speed and capacity) or better. The last time I got a bad HD from Western Digital, I got a refurb. Thus I conclude that the tech support from Maxtor did me justice with no hassles...I will still buy Maxtors because they took care of me. BTW, according to Maxtor tech support, my case if very uncommon. My motherboard is an MSI K7T266 Pro that supports Athlon up to XP 2000 and does ATA100 + Raid. The hard drive does not have dead sectors and has not stranded me...it just does not want to run at ATA100...but I am sure that the new one will. Also, my WD refurb hd is still running strong.---I was skeptical at first....but I will always take NEW over REFURB. Maxtor is still a good drive and good company to do business with. I also have 2 other Maxtors, a 20 Gig ATA66 and a similar Maxtor 30 gig 7200 rpm that work great.
