Maybelline Lash Expansion Mascara - Read expert review at epinions.com"/>
Pros: thickens, gives eyes a full, open look, lasts all day, doesn't flake/smudge
Cons: clumps if directions not followed, can be somewhat difficult to remove
I went on a bit of a mascara binge recently. Somehow, and I swear I didn't do it on purpose, but close to a dozen new mascaras ended up in my makeup bag in the span of a month. I could justify it by saying each one does something different (heh, right!) but it's easier to chalk it up to Santa being extra generous this year. In any case, one mascara floating around with new batch is Maybelline Lash Expansion Mascara.
Why did I buy it?
Because I hadn't tried it yet.
Because with every new mascara that comes onto the market there is the promise that it will be somehow better than the last one.
And because the flashy ads promised to give us what every mascara should - "...thicker, longer, fuller..." lashes.
Lash Expansion comes in your standard mascara tube with twist off wand. The tube is navy and silver and a bit on the chunky side. You get .22 oz/6.5ml of mascara, which is within the average. Who even takes the time to check exactly how much mascara is in the tube anyhow, right? Well 15 plus mascaras and nothing much to do on a Sunday afternoon makes for some fascinating comparisons. But that's just me. Moving on...
The brush is fat and full, which is always exciting as I immediately think the mascara is going to do a great job of coating and "combing" through my lashes.
There are 3 basic shades available:
The price hovers around the US$6 mark and is available at the usual retailers carrying the Maybelline line. I paid US$4.50 on sale.
This is what Maybelline has to say about Lash Expansion:
- Exclusive lash-wrapping brush for "look-at-me-lashes"
- Expands and extends lashes
- No clumps or globs
- Available in washable or waterproof
How does it measure up?
The previously mentioned fat brush and full bristles can be a bit scary at first. I kept thinking I was going to get mascara on my inner eyelid when trying to coat the inner lashes, and admittedly you have to be careful. Other than having to be very light handed on the inner lashes I found the brush was great. It coated my lashes quickly and went on smoothly. There were no mascara globs on the brush and the perfect amount comes out of the tube.
Maybelline warns not to let the mascara dry between coats and they're serious - the mascara will clump like crazy and give you spidery lashes otherwise. I find one coat to generally be enough, as my lashes are long to begin with, but I've applied two coats on occasion and never had a problem with clumping unless I waited too long between coats.
Lash Expansion does a good job at lengthening, a great job at thickening and a fantastic job at making lashes look fuller. It separates well and makes my lashes look very dark (I use the very black shade).
It also holds curl well. My lashes have a bit of a natural curl to begin with and sometimes, depending on the mascara, I can get away with not using an eyelash curler. This is one of those mascaras. While it doesn't self-curl, it opens up the eyes giving the illusion of curl. However this could be particular to my lashes and may not perform the same on those with dead-straight lashes.
Lash Expansion lasts all day and has never smudged or rubbed off underneath my eyes, and I'm in the middle of a scorching summer at the moment! It also has never flaked and left tiny dried up mascara particles around my eyes as we all know can tend to happen. I use the washable formula and have found that it takes a bit more effort to remove than other washable mascaras, but this is a good problem. I'd rather take a bit more time to remove a mascara than to have it fade off halfway through the day.
While it's not my favourite mascara, not in my top three, or even top five, this is a great mascara for days when I want thick, full, "fat" lashes. Nice one, Maybelline.
