My Vision Of Myself Does Not Always Match The Reality
In my mind, I am still an eighteen-year-old pocket Venus with a dewy, radiant complexion and a belly so beautiful I owe it to the world to wear ultra low-rise jeans. However, I have suffered the ravages of carrying, bearing, and raising a baby to toddlerhood. I am no longer a juicy little teenager. For the first time in my life, I avoid mirrors in the morning and select clothing and cosmetics not simply according to fashion, but with an eye to cover my flaws. I miss feeling that make up is my accessory and plaything, and not my camouflage.
Like most women, I usually strive for a natural look. I hope to fool the people I come into contact with into believing that I was gorgeous from the moment I rolled out of bed. If I am spending a normal day doing errands and meeting friends for lunch, toddler in tow, I just want my products to do the job as quickly and effectively as possible so I can get out the door. However, I have another side that believes any minute, the paparazzi could show up and start snapping pictures like crazy. This other side of me buys black kohl eyeliner, screen-siren red lipstick, and false eyelashes. This side of me sits down in front of a mirror and plays artist and canvas at the same time, creating a face that could stand up to thank the Academy, although the only audience I am actually about to thank is my babysitter.
...I Would Also Like To Thank Lash Stylist...
There is something incredibly glamorous about products that require some time and attention to apply. This is part of the appeal of red lipstick or liquid eyeliner, because they demand that a woman sit down and think about what she is doing to get that perfect red lip or cat eye. Maybelline's Lash Stylist is this kind of product.
I actually purchased it based on a negative review that accurately described this product as difficult to apply and changing the whole feel of your eyelashes. She also mentioned that the look was dramatic, and the applicator was a comb rather than a brush. I have never met a Maybelline mascara that I liked before, but the idea of combing on my mascara intrigued me. I always want more control over my eye make up.
Control you will have. The applicator is a comb slightly angled to give you a better position as you stroke it up the lashes. The comb has a double row of bristles which are shaped like a V. This reminds me of the cake mascaras used before it started to come in a tube in the sixties. Applying takes time and attention. The first careless stroke yielded an uneven and very wet coat. The formulation, which I purchased in Very Black, is inky and sticky. To get achieve an even, lifted, and separated fringe of lashes, you have to comb the formula through several times. This works much better if you wipe the excess mascara off of the comb first. Because it is so sticky, it creates tension and noticeable curl after applying. After it dries, it feels very stiff and is not easy to get used to. The way I got used to it was by frequently glancing in the mirror and batting like crazy. I love the way this mascara makes my eyes look.
Nobody Wakes Up This Beautiful
I have dark eyes and dark, curly hair, so it takes a lot for mascara to really change my look. If I'm going out for the night and I want to make my mascara count, I use an eyelash curler heated up by a hair dryer and apply a primer coat before brushing the color on. Because I tend to really load the mascara on, I comb my lashes afterward to separate them and remove clumps. Sometimes I even wear false eyelashes, which take a lot of time and attention to apply since I glue on individual little fringes, which look much more convincing than a full row.
Lash Stylist gives me lashes that rival all those efforts, so for the dramatic, flirty, show-offy look you get, it's actually quick and easy in comparison. My eyelashes stand up just as much as if I had curled them before applying. Although they feel spiky on the eyelid, the lashes appear full and feathery. The first time I put this on was on a normal, ho-hum day. I had nothing to do, but I had purchased this in the course of my other errands and played with it before moving on to laundry and dinner preparation. I wore it with no other make up on and my comfy housewife clothes, but when my husband came home he smiled when I turned around from the kitchen sink to look at him. He told me I looked very pretty, which after five years of marriage and a child is not a compliment I hear flying around the way I used to. Since I wasn't washing the dishes naked, he must have noticed the way the mascara opened up and enhanced my eyes.
One problem I have had is it is very hard to wash off. I like to use waterproof mascara, because you never know when Old Yeller might be on television. Sometimes, I am very lazy and wash my face but leave my mascara on all night. This makes mirrors just a little easier to face before I've had coffee or used undereye concealor. Usually, waterproof mascaras are very obliging for this questionable practice, but this one smears at night. It also smears when it gets wet, but won't come all the way off with cleanser or even tearless baby shampoo. I have to tug it off my lashes with a washcloth, which is not enjoyable. I imagine I may have some reviews of make up removers to publish soon, because I will need to find one that cleans this mascara off without yanking my lashes out. I wouldn't use the waterproof version of this again, and I'm glad I discovered this flaw before bringing it to the beach.
What Do You Mean, You Don't Want This?
Some women will not have any use for a mascara that cannot be applied in the car. Some women will not like the way it feels to comb on mascara. I do get the feeling while applying that I could gouge my eye out if I were suddenly startled. Many women will overwhelmingly agree with the conclusions of the negative review on this product. For these reasons, I have the urge to stockpile this before it gets discontinued. If you want more smolder, more drama, and more control from your mascara, I suggest you do the same.
