| xiphoid's Full Review: Maybelline Lash Stylist Mascara |
Hi, I'm Robin - and here is my handy-dandy review of Lash Stylist Mascara by Maybelline. Enjoy.
I don't wear a lot of make-up. In fact, I don't like wearing make-up at all. I find it unnatural and uncomfortable to have stuff smeared all over my face. I prefer to be able to scratch an itch in the corner of my eye without having to worry about smudging 7 layers of paint. About the only thing I find tolerable to wear on a daily basis is mascara. I've found that mascara adds a little something without looking overdone. After all, my eyes are the one thing I don't mind flaunting because it's the one part of me I actually like.
Before I tell you about mascara brands, I feel I should mention the look I go for when choosing a mascara. I like my lashes to be thick, long, dark, curled, and dramatic - I don't worry about subtlety. I tend to buy the darkest color available, whether it be black, or even blackest black. I also will never, ever ever use an eyelash curler because those things are tools of pure evil and they have no place on my face! So, I always look for a mascara that will do the curling for me. That's how I go.
So...
I usually find one brand of mascara and stick with it - until something better comes along. I started off using L'Oreal - Le Grand Curl, and then traded that in for Lash Architect by the same brand. I used Lash Architect for a couple of years, and was generally happy with it. That changed recently when I saw a commercial for Maybelline Lash Stylist.
At first I thought it was just my obsession with Adriana Lima. After a while I realized that I really, really needed to try that stupid mascara. Apparently anything Adriana does is good enough for me. But seriously, this mascara seemed different. You see, the one problem I have with mascaras, even my trusty Lash Architect, is that after a couple of weeks it gets clumpy and the application quality goes downhill. So, when I saw that Lash Stylist had a totally different kind of applicator - a comb instead of a brush - I figured it was worth a try.
So...
I bought it - in very black. The cost was about the same as my old mascaras, which is fine. As much as I want to drop $25 or more for a more fancy mascara (um, Dior please), I have a hard time justifying it when I'm going to be replacing it just as often anyway. So, $6 is enough for me.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the package was the tube itself - it was different. I was used to longer tubes, made of silvery plastic. This was a little shorter and was black and more rubber-like. This may seem rather asinine to
point out, but it matters when you're dealing with putting sharp objects near your eyes - grippy. I liked it. I like pretty much anything that's black and rubber-like because of this. Therefore, I was happy.
When I opened up the tube to pull out the comb, I was a little weirded out. I could barely see anything on the end of that little applicator. We're all used to brushes, and here was a comb - a tiny little comb. I was expecting something a little more substantial and all I saw were two rows of very, very small comb teeth. Now, this means that I couldn't just haphazardly brush the mascara on like I normally do. It requires a little more positioning than that.
I applied the mascara with the combs angled just under my lashes. At one point I hit my eye, and as one other reviewer pointed out, this was not comfortable. Although, you're obviously supposed to avoid hitting your eye, so as long as you're capable of doing that, I think you'll be fine.
I was actually pleased with the way Lash Stylist went on. As mentioned, I personally prefer my lashes to be very dark, very thick, very long, and separated, but not separated by individual eyelash - and this did exactly what I needed it to. It curled my lashes a little, it lengthened and separated them the way I like, and obviously darkened them. If you like your lashes to appear more subtle, this may not be for you.
The only downfall in terms of applied look is that it left my lashes looking a little 'empty.' That's the best way I can describe it. I think my Lash Architect left them looking a little fuller, but all else aside, Lash Stylist is my new favorite - for now.
What I like best about it is the tube it comes in (it's cute and easy to manipulate), and the way it goes on. The combs work well to make sure lashes don't clump (a common problem with your usual brush mascaras). It makes sense, because there are simply less places for your lashes to move through the comb, compared to how they (and the liquid) move through a brush. I'd say the coverage is pretty even, and it goes on smooth. I will admit that the comb applicator takes a little getting used to - it's quite different than using a brush, but it doesn't take long to get the hang of it.
So, if you're looking for a different kind of mascara that will give you long, dramatic lashes, or you simply have an obsession with Adriana Lima, Maybelline Lash Stylist may be the right choice for you!
