| luvrdaisy's Full Review: Maybelline Moisture Whip Pressed Powder |
I gave up on writing cosmetics reviews fairly early because, frankly, I wasn't that good at it and there are so many great cosmetics reviewers here that there wasn't a dire need. But unfortunately I have a bone to pick in Maybelline, and this is the place to do it if there ever was one.
Some time fairly recently, Maybelline introduced a line of makeup called Moisture Whip, makeup that moisturized your face and lips while making you look pretty. It's a great idea, really, considering that makeup tends to dry out facial skin for a lot of people. Of course, for some people, makeup makes their skin really oily, so Maybelline made sure to advertise the Moisture Whip line as anti-oil as well. Imagine that- a makeup that controls oil and shine while moisturizing your skin. Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?
Well, I can't speak for all the Moisture Whip products, but purchasing their Moisture Whip Pressed Powder was the gravest mistake of my cosmetic-purchasing career. In general, I do not like powder (too much makes my face too matte in appearance), but I found it necessary for my makeup routine. I use a fairly greasy foundation stick to cover the uneven areas of my skin, and a powder to reduce shine, blend the foundation, and "set" it. Usually this gives my skin just enough glow, without me looking like I got slimed by the ghostbusters.
I've used loose powders and pressed powders, and in general I prefer the pressed powders because I don't have as much "excess" hanging from my face when I'm done applying it. I pay little attention to the brand, as I find most pressed powders to be about the same in quality and results. At least, that is, until I bought this Moisture Whip Pressed Powder (I really can't believe I spent my hard-earned money on this stuff).
First Problem
This pressed powder is abnormally hard. Rock-hard, in fact. I am sure that on the hardness scale used to evaluate rocks and minerals, this would be between quartz and diamond. I literally had to bang it with a hammer to loosen it enough that the "puff" applicator picked any up. Otherwise I ended up rubbing the applicator against the powder so hard that it hurt my wrists. I think when Maybelline wants to produce a "pressed powder," they steamroll it or chemically bond it to make it as "pressed" as possible. As you use this powder, you will also notice areas that are harder than others, that remain untouched as the rest of the powder wears down around these areas.
Second Problem
The hardness issue leads to the second problem, which is that the applicator "puff" (not very puffy) tears and becomes useless very quickly. I prefer to use a brush for my face powder, but the brushes don't make a dent in the surface of this powder. Therefore, the fact that the applicator falls apart after only a few uses is not only disappointing, but enfuriating.
And not only does it fall apart, but when you do manage to get the powder onto the applicator, it rarely makes the transfer to your face. Try as I might, I couldn't notice a difference in the shininess of my face after applying this product. In fact, I think the areas of color on the applicator were more due to rubbing off my foundation than actually applying the powder.
Does it moisurize?
Well, I don't really know if it moisturizes or not. See, I could barely get any of it to stay on my face for any period of time, so I've been attributing the condition of my skin to the new foundation stick and the use of Olay Total Effects moisturizer. I don't think this powder made any difference, positive or negative, in the condition of my skin.
I have struggled with this face powder for a month now, mostly because I am too stubborn to admit that I have lost the battle and that Maybelline has gypped me of five dollars. I am absolutely determined to get at least some good use out of this product for my five dollars, but I seem to be losing the battle. So:
Ladies: Do not buy this.
Gentlemen: If you happen to be with your girlfriend/wide while she is shopping for cosmetics, do not let her even look at the Moisture Whip Pressed Powder if she buys it, she will drive you crazy either complaining about it or hammering at the powder compact at six o'clock in the morning as she tries to get ready for work.
Thanks, and I'll be returning to the regularly scheduled book/movie/fish product reviews tomorrow,
~k~
