Pros: oil free, nondrying, noncomedogenic, no break outs, clean-feeling makeup
Cons: doesn't cover redness or smooth over large pores/blotchiness, still need powder
The Bottom Line: Pure.Makeup is great for creating a natural look everyday but it won't cover up many blemishes on picture day... but maybe you won't have any by then.

| jeavinl's Full Review: Maybelline Pure Makeup Shine-Free Foundation with ... |
Ive always been a little predisposed to Maybelline makeup. The shades and colors always worked well with my skin and I was happy with their Shine-Free blemish-control foundation. So I was eager to try their new Pure.Makeup, which is an oil-free formula made with aloe, chamomile, vitamin E, and 50% water. After my bad experience with Cover Girl Fresh Look Oil Free Makeup, I was a little weary, but still open to try something new.
I actually sent away for free samples of Maybellines Pure.Makeup before I purchased it. What I got in the mail was a $2 coupon and a sheet of peel-back tiny samples of all of the available shades so I was able to test out which matched my skin most closely. As of 4/29/06, this offer is still available on the www.maybelline.com site.
THE BASICS
Maybelline Pure.Makeup is a shine-free foundation made with 50% water. It is oil free and presumably does not clog pores. It contains several skin-soothing ingredients, including aloe, chamomile, and vitamin E. The tagline for this product is Worry-free makeup that wont clog your pores or look fake.
Pure.Makeup comes in 12 shades for three skin tones (light, medium, dark). There are five light shades (porcelain ivory, classic ivory, natural ivory, nude, and creamy natural), four medium ones (sandy beige, pure beige, medium beige, and honey beige), and three dark shades (tan, caramel, and cocoa). As with other foundations Ive used, there is a slight powdery scent to the makeup but its not overwhelming.
The packaging is attractive. Pure.Makeup comes in a 1 oz. light-green, plastic, tapered tube with a silver cover. Its lightweight, shatter-proof packaging can easily fit in a purse. The tiny opening dispenses the makeup slowly and prevents accidental spills.
Pure.Makeup is a new product and may not be widely available yet. I have seen it at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and Target. It retails for $5.99 at Walgreens.

MY EXPERIENCE
Like I said, I sent away for free samples before purchasing this makeup so I tested out a few shades. There was only enough makeup in each peel-back strip for my nose and a couple light dabs on my chin so I applied it to those spots and used my Cover Girl Fresh Complexion Pocket Powder for the rest of my face. I tried the makeup during a week when I normally would breakout (ladies, you know what I mean) and found no new blemishes after several days of use. I even forgot to wash it off before bed once (usually a sure prescription for giant volcanoes) and had clear skin the next morning. I tried this tactic a week or two later, on purpose this time, when I bought the full-sized product and didnt break out then either.
Part of the reason I forgot to wash it off was because it felt so light. I didnt even remember I had makeup on. Usually by the end of the day my face feels itchy and oily and I need to scrub it or at least rub some astringent. My nose, especially, tends to develop a light oily film that sooner than later leads to giant blackheads. This wasnt the case with the Pure.Makeup. My forehead (after using the full-size product), on the other hand, did require powder toward the end of the day.
That said, Pure.Makeup doesnt provide all-over coverage. Because its so light, it blends completely into my skin and doesnt do much for any redness I already have. It does a half-decent job of evening my skintone but it doesnt smooth over my giant pores like heavier makeups can. Also, even though its oil free, Ive needed to use some sort of powder or oil-blotting product by the end of the day to maintain an oil-free complexion.
What I discovered with the peel-back samples was that I needed a darker shade than I normally buy with other products. I typically opt for one of the two lightest shades of foundation but with this one I needed to go one shade up (natural ivory) to get decent coverage.
OVERALL
I did buy a full-size tube of Pure.Makeup, on sale of course, because I am fairly happy with this product for everyday use. Its far from perfect, but the premise (oil-free, water-based foundation) is good and the execution is adequate. For special occasions and photo ops, I would definitely turn elsewhere.
