| amelia_walpole's Full Review: Maybelline Pure Makeup Shine-Free Foundation with ... |
So whats this Maybelline Pure stuff?
Ah. My love/hate relationship with face makeup.
Over the years Ive tried many different foundations. Not because I couldnt find one that did everything I wanted a foundation to do, but because I could never settle on the correct color. I went for a long time thinking I had warm undertones in my skin, which explains why almost all foundations Ive owned looked like fake tans on my face. And these were very fair colors, too! Recently I discovered that I am in fact a cool woman. My tones are pink. Why it took me this to figure that out, I cannot say. But after growing tired of spending money on foundations that didnt look good on me, I found the Maybelline Pure Makeup foundation. At the price ($4.97) it seemed like a great bargain. Plus Id read some favorable reviews on it. I hadnt paid such a low price for foundation in a long, long time. So I decided to give it a try. I am very glad I did.
Up until I found this product, my foundation of choice was Maybellines Shine Free liquid foundation. But I had the wrong color, and by the time I decided that I needed the right color, Shine Free products were already being phased out at my local drug stores. A shame. Its a foundation that worked great on my oily skin. But now that I have the Maybelline Pure Makeup, I dont think I am missing anything anymore. With the exception of some shine on my nose during the day (still need a little powder for that), the makeup formula works almost perfect for me.
Packaging and Contents
Since the Maybelline Pure foundation boasts a 50% water content, its really no surprise that the foundation tube is pale aqua in color. There are a few dots of foundation on the front that provide a striking contrast. Maybellines logo, the name of the product, and a few tiny factoids of information near the bottom of the tube are in a medium gray. There is also the name of the color and a category number on the front (Ill explain the category number in a moment). The cap of the tube is also gray. The tube resembles a small toothpaste tube; it sits on the cap so the foundation is always ready to be squeezed out. The tube is about 3.5 inches long and 1 ¾ inches at the widest point. The tube contains 1 oz of liquid foundation. The cap unscrews from the bottle, revealing a slender extension that expels the foundation. Ive noticed through use that this extension can easily get messy, as can the inside of the cap. But this can be taken care of with a little cleaning and maintenance.
The consistency of the foundation is thicker in the bottle, but it seems to get thinner as you rub it on your skin. Its like a thin acrylic paint at first. The scent isnt heavy at all. It reminds me a little of the scent of mascara. Not exactly roses, but not irritating either.
Choosing the right color for you
If you go to your local drug store, Wal-Mart, or supermarket, you should find a display in the makeup section devoted to this product. When I went to pick out my foundation, I found a color chart attached to the display. There are three main shades of color- Light, Medium, and Dark. Each main category had between 3 and 5 different color tints to choose from. They had their own number in each section, with the highest number being the darkest foundation in the main category.
Does that make any sense?
Ok, let me put it this way. First you need to determine your skin shade: Light, medium, or dark. I am a fair-skinned Caucasian, so my category is Light. Next, I compared the skin on the underside of my arm to the attached chart, and determined that I am a number ׁ in the Light category. Number 3 is a cool ivory, not the lightest ivory in the category, but I tried that foundation and it looked great on my skin. I knew I had finally found the right color for me. Numbers 1 and 3 in the Light category are for cool skin tones, and Numbers 2,4, and 5 are for warm skin tones.
My experience
I couldnt wait to get home with my new cosmetic find. When I first applied the foundation with my fingers, I was slightly disappointed that the coverage wasnt medium to heavy. Indeed, this foundation is very light and does not cover heavily. But then I realized how much more natural I looked with the lighter foundation. I didnt look like I had applied my makeup with a butter knife. My natural skin tones still shined through, my natural blush was there, and I didnt look cakey at all. The foundation was very easy to blend on my skin. In fact it was so light, I didnt feel like I was wearing any foundation. But I could see the difference and I loved it.
I checked my face a few hours later. I saw some shine on my nose, which I took care of with powder. My only little complaint about this foundation is that I get shiny easily, even though the Pure is an oil-free makeup. But a little dab of powder and Im fine for a few hours. Plus in hot weather the makeup run and smears off when I sweat, but I have yet to encounter a foundation that doesnt do this. So my complaints are minor. The good definitely outweighs the bad.
To get an idea of the coverage, think of this foundation as a tinted moisturizer. The coverage is light, although this formula does not moisturize skin and goes on a little heavier than a tinted facial lotion.

Product Claims
Claims from Walgreens.com. My comments are in italics.
- Shine-free foundation with H2O (The formula definitely contains H20. But as for being shine-free, thats not entirely accurate. This foundation doesnt contain any elements that absorb oil, so youll probably find your t-zone a little shiny a few hours after application as I did. However, as an oil-free formula, at least it doesnt promote break-outs and excess shine.)
- 50% water, won't clog pores, flawless finish (Its definitely a water-based formula; its light, easy to blend, and not greasy. I havent noticed any pimples or serious blackheads since Ive been using the Pure foundation. My skin looks natural yet even-toned.)
Finis
For the price and the claims, this is one of the best foundations I have ever used. It certainly beats out many others I have tried at twice and three times the price.
There is also a Pure powder compact and a salicylic acid concealer. I own them both and I hope to do a review of them at a later time.
