Pros: Curls and lengthens lashes somewhat, very little clumping, decent brush, no flaking or smudging
Cons: Doesn't curl and lengthen as much as it claims to
The Bottom Line: It's good, but it's not as "extreme" as it claims to be. It's the best mascara that Maybelline has in its line at this point, though.

By now, those of you who read my reviews know that I'm the drugstore brand Queen. I like the fact that I can pick up cosmetics at my local drugstores and don't have to drive 45+ minutes to the nearest malls in order to spend even more money on high-end cosmetics. When I get the chance, I do like to try high-end brands, but my budget and my conscience don't always let me! So my only consolation is that I'm usually the first to try the new products introduced by the drugstore brands...because I'm in those stores all the time, I see those products first!
This review is on my latest find, Maybelline Sky High Curves Mascara.
Product Details:
Sky High Curves is the latest mascara introduced by Maybelline. This mascara claims to visibly lengthen lashes up to 30% and sets lashes to a daring 30-degree curve.
The packaging of Sky High Curves is nothing special. It's a simple mascara tube that measures just over 5" (are mascara tubes getting long, or what?) and 5/8" in diameter. The tube is made from dark blue, slightly sparkly plastic with the cap being the same color, but with silver plastic in the middle of the top. The name of the product is printed on the tube in silver metallic letters. The applicator brush is attached to the wand, which just screws onto the tube like any mascara.
The brush itself is triangle-shaped! This is very interesting, and you will hardly notice it - I didn't notice it myself until I saw this fact on Maybelline.com. I looked at my brush, and sure enough - it's triangle-shaped.
Sky High Curves Mascara comes in a non-waterproof and waterproof formula. The waterproof version was introduced recently and is in a light blue tube. This mascara is available in three shades, all of which can be seen at Maybelline.com: Soft Black, Very Black and Brownish Black.
There is .16 oz. of mascara in each tube.
Ingredients (taken from packaging):
Water, rice bran wax, carnauba wax, hydrogenated steryl olive esters, stearic acid, candelilla wax, triethanolamine, palmitic acid, acacia senegal, panthenol, methylparaben, hydroxyethylcellulose, dimethicone copolyol, propylparaben, polyvinyl alcohol, simethicone, PPG-17/492. May Contain: Carmine/CI 75470, chromium hydroxide green/CI 77289, chromium oxide greens/CI 77288, ultramarines/CI 77007, mica, titanium dioxide/CI 77891, ferric ferrocyanide/CI 77510.
My Experience:
Applying Sky High Curves Mascara is very easy. Like most of Maybelline's mascaras, the mascara itself seems to be smooth and not full of clumps right out of the tube. The mascara goes on easily and there are very, very few clumps. I do get the occasional clump, though.
When I first purchased this product, I was excited about the fact that I *might* not have to use an eyelash curler ever again, if this product really does set lashes to a 30-degree curve. I suspected, though, that this was a marketing gimmick and that I'll forever be curling my lashes with a curler!
It's a good thing that I didn't have my heart set on throwing out that eyelash curler, because this mascara really does not set lashes to a 30-degree curve! I have to say, though, that it does curl already-curled lashes a little bit further. What I mean to say here is that it does lift the lashes a little more. It makes the eyes look like they are more open.
As far as lengthening the lashes goes, there isn't anything even close to 30% here...at least not on my lashes. I'd say 10% at the most - and that might even be an illusion. I don't believe that any mascara can lengthen lashes more than just a smidge! I think it's an optical illusion and that lashes look thicker and longer only because they are coated with mascara.
One of the things I like best about this mascara is that it does not pick up face powder, powder eyeshadow, etc. from my face. I've used mascaras that seem to attract and get coated with face powder and eyeshadow, totally cancelling out the dark black effect of mascara. Sky High Curves Mascara does not seem to attract any of these things and stays black all day.
I have not experienced any flaking or smudging while using this mascara.
What's Up With The Triangle Brush?
I don't think that the triangle-shaped brush does much, other than to help to curl the lashes somewhat. I do think, though, that the only reason that this mascara seems to curl the lashes at all is because it dries fast and holds the lashes into the position you brushed them into (up!). This mascara is loaded with waxes and I think that it's thicker and dries faster so that it gives the impression of curled lashes.
The brush is fluffy, but not really fat. It's the perfect size for getting into the corners of the eye to get to the tiny lashes, but is still fluffy enough to coat the bigger lashes sufficiently.
All In All:
All in all, this is a good mascara. If you forget your eyelash curler, this will help you to get your lashes curled somewhat. I like the fact that it does lengthen the lashes, doesn't flake and doesn't clump. If I could change anything about it, I'd give it more lengthening and curling power.
Price and Purchasing Information:
Sky High Curves Mascara was introduced at the end of July, so it is slowly appearing in stores. I found mine at my local Rite Aid drugstore. The regular price at Rite Aid is $6.89. That drugstore chain was having a "40% off all Maybelline cosmetics" sale, so I got mine for $4.13, and I had an additional $1.00-off coupon, bringing my final price down to $3.13. I would probably pay the full price of $6.89 if there were no other new mascara to try at the moment and if I were all the way out of mascara - otherwise I'd put that $6.89 toward a Clinique waterproof mascara. I do think this is a good drugstore-brand choice, though.
