| historygyrl's Full Review: Maybelline Superstay Silky Foundation |
I picked this foundation up on a whim as I ambled very slowly though the cosmetic aisle at Wal Mart. I have used Maybelline products intermittently through the years and while I've liked some of their products I have yet to go bonkers over anything. Yet, I am an optimist, so I keep trying. I had been using Prescriptives Virtual Skin for over 7 months when I decided to give this a try and while I still use it here and there, it is not foundation nirvana. That being said, however, this product has a number of positive attributes and while my first go at using it left me unsure, over time I do find I like the product.
Maybelline Superstay Silky Foundation is one of a large array of new beauty products that market themselves as having "staying power" -- perhaps in the recognition that regardless of what they do, women have very long days! Cover Girl has their Outlast foundation, Estee Lauder has Double Wear Stay in Place foundation, you get the idea. At least cosmetic companies realize that makeup that fades by 4 is passé, annoying, and they are trying to do something about it. Ahhh, but have they succeeded?
The product is a one-step product that is supposed to combine the benefits of a primer with foundation but it saves time by eliminating the separately applied primer. I have only dabbled in makeup primer so whether or not this product offers comparable results I cannot say. It is sold in one ounce plastic bottles with one half being a white primer and the other half your foundation, both dispensed via one central pump. I was surprised at how well the two blend in one application, no splotches or blotches. The company states on their website, "This long-wearing foundation delivers 16 hours of flawless coverage. Super silky feel. Blends in one step."
The first time I applied it what I noticed is that it took a few tries to dispense an even amount from both sides, so be forewarned! You have to press exactly in the middle of the pump so that you get an equal amount of primer and foundation. I mean exactly in the middle. That can be frustrating, fyi, if you are in a rush. I did not use my fingers or a sponge to put it on; I used a foundation brush as it is my favorite way to apply makeup. One very good point is that a little goes a long way with this product and my first tries left me with extra product in my palm. I settled on two pumps and that is plenty for full-face coverage. It is a one-step process, so if you currently use primer this may save you a little time.
I also thought to myself with my first use, "Oh, the return of opaque foundation!" as it is thick and quite a contrast to Virtual Skin. Yet, this is not a bad thing as it offers more coverage than other foundations and it helps to hide minor flaws (but not major flaws or dark circles). What I have found over time is that if you have an event, a dinner, somewhere you want to look a little more elegant and do not want to have to retouch your face a lot, this is your product. This stuff stays put! It is not going anywhere! It stays on your face; it stayed on my foundation brush, even in my palm after I wiped it off. Wow, is this foundation or glue? But, this is a good feature as I hate have having to do touch ups or looking in the mirror only to see my makeup has faded. So on this point, the company is right, it stays!
Insofar as silky feel, here is the negative. I have dry skin and this product, while not drying, did not make my skin feel or look super smooth. It is a very matte finish, so it is good for photos, but if you shy away from matte products this is not for you. I do still use this as noted above, but when I do I dab on some eye cream on top of it after it has been applied and dried and that seems to help my skin look a little more dewy. Also, after a hard day's night when you have circles and wrinkles, well, this does not enhance your appearance as it can sit in those little crow's feet so apply with care. I do not know how it would be for oily or combination skin, it may work better with those skin types and give you a different feel.
In terms of color I would give it a negative as well. There are twelve shades to select from, raging from five shades of ivory to four medium beige shades to three dark shades. I am super fair so for me the color was pretty easy, just go with the lightest; however, if you have medium or darker toned skin I would think that the color selection is rather paltry, especially for dark skinned women. I also think that unless you use Maybelline products or you just know your shade (as I know I am beyond pale) you might have a tough go of figuring out whether you are Medium Beige, Sand Beige, Honey Beige, you get the idea. I realize this is common with all drug store foundations but since the product comes in a white plastic bottle that is only partially see through it is more difficult to discern your exact shade match.
The ingredients are the normal cornicopia of chemicals: Water/Aqua, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Silica, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Glycerin, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Polyglyceryl-3 Disiloxane Dimethicone, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Sodium Chloride, Nylon-12, Cetyl - PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Propylene Carbonate, BIS-PEG-15 Methyl Ether Dimethicone, Laureth-4, Pentylene Glycol, Nylon-611/Dimethicone Copolymer, Polyacrylamide, Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, Methylparaben, Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Propylparaben, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Branched Dimethicone, Laureth-7, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Sodium PCA, Urea, Trehalose, Polyquaternium-51, Soluable Collagen, Sodium Hyaluronate, May Contain: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides (taken from drugstore.com).
I do have sensitive skin and this product does not irritate it whatsoever, so that is a plus as well. No breakouts, no itchies, nothing. It cost me almost $10.00 which is the typical price. As noted, it lasts quite awhile so it is a good value.
Overall I would say this is a good product if you need a makeup that can and will stay put. However, be advised that your might have problems with shade selection and that the coverage could be better, so you'll need concealer if your under eye circles are dark or you have blemishes. I do like this one, but I only trot it out on super long days or for events where I find its staying power is often better then my own.
