Bottom Line:If money is not an object, this book is a must-buy.
The Mayo Clinic is widely regarded as one of the world's top medical centers, and they've published a top-notch book on pregnancy and infancy. Contributed to by over 130 obstetricians, pediatricians, family doctors, nurses, social workers, dieticians, medical illustrators and other specialists, this big book is both wide in its coverage of subjects and deep in its description of each of them. I trust this book in part because it is written by a team of medical experts in collaboration, not by one or two individuals who may have their own cookie to push (Dr. Wm Sears springs to mind).
How comprehensive is this book? When my wife was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, the most common pregnancy complication, this book was the only one we could find (on a rather large shelf at a rather large bookstore) that dealt fully with the problem, its implications and its treatment.
Although the book's written by a medical center, it doesn't simply focus on medicine; it also covers diet, relationships, baby care and those funky behavioral issues that inevitably arise. This book has been an excellent resource for my wife and I, and we both wholeheartedly recommend it to you.
Another advantage to this book is that it covers both pregnancy and the first year of childhood. Rather than transition from one book to another rather abruptly, you can continue to refer to the Mayo Book as your resource.
How to Afford this Book
If you can afford it, the guide is a must-buy. Unfortunately, the book costs quite a bit: over $30 at the bookstore. Here's a helpful tip --try Amazon.com's book auction. Used copies are selling for $8-10 as I write this review.
