| mmryther's Full Review: Maytag MDB5600A Jetclean II 24 in. Built-in Dishwa... |
When it came time to buy a new dishwasher two years ago, we went with a Maytag, influenced by their name recognition and reputation and, of course, the cute Maytag repairman commercials. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this particular dishwasher and I probably wouldn't buy another Maytag, period.
The most serious drawback is the seeming lack of quality. Just recently the handle shattered, making it impossible to open the dishwasher without using brute force. My husband tried to look inside, but of course the screws on the inside of the door were not common ones, and thus the call to the repairman. The good news was that we did not have to wait for a part; the repairman came prepared. But thats also the bad news. He told us this is such a common problem with Maytag dishwashers that he carries replacement handles (in white and black!) in his tool kit. He fixes about three a week! And we dont live in that big of a city. He showed me the shattered handle and said that the cheap plastic spindles it has causes it to break after repeated stress, i.e., opening and closing the dishwasher. The fix took about ten minutes and set us back $109.00.
As for the rest of the dishwasher, all I can say is it works, but I guess I expected more for the price and the brand. With or without rinse aid, the glasses are often cloudy and the dishes many times have food still on them. The Tough Scrub cycle does help, but I dont want to have to run that all the time. There is usually always grime left in the bottom after a cleaning cycle, although the door at least wipes clean easily. And speaking of the door, its so light and flimsy, Im afraid its going to fall off one of these days. After seeing how the handle was constructed, I cant say I have much confidence in the quality of the rest of the dishwasher.
A couple other negatives. The regular cycle is very long, over two hours. And quiet it is not. Although billed as the Quiet Series dishwasher, it makes too much noise to have going while were watching television in the adjoining family room. Id hate to hear one that wasnt in the Quiet Series! Our old Kenmore dishwasher had some nicks and dents in it and definitely needed updating, but it worked better than this newer Maytag. Next time Ill give the Kenmores a closer look.
