In Margate, Florida, there is a beautiful golf club/country club called The Carolina Golf Club. This is one of those gorgeous, fancy places, where lavish weddings and fancy corporate office parties are held. In other words, it's a place I don't go to very often. But a couple times a year, I make it a point to go there for dinner, or for Sunday brunch. Why? Because they have a wonderful restaurant, open to the public called McDivot's. I would describe the cuisine as "fancy American", the service as "elegant", the food as "delicious", and the prices as "not as bad as you might fear, given the country club setting". Whether for dinner, or for their extravagant Sunday brunch, the meal is always wonderful.
Appetizers
They have your basic appetizers that you can find anywhere - artichoke dip, chicken strips, crab cakes, potato skins. But they also have a very special starter that's perfect if, like me, you enjoy shrimp and you like to live on the wild side. If so, try their Shrimp Martini. What is it? Basically a shrimp cocktail, but the shrimps are splashed with vodka, and served with a giant green olive. (You can also just ask for a "regular" shrimp cocktail if you're not feeling quite so wild). The appetizers range from $7-$11.
Soups & Salads
They always have French Onion soup and New England clam chowder. There's also a soup of the day. Several salads are available as side dishes, or you can add chicken or shrimp to make them main courses.
Entrees
They have several kinds of pasta dishes, served with chicken, shrimp, or mixed seafood. Seafood Fra Diavlo comes with scallops, shrimp, and fresh fish served over linguine, in a spicy tomato sauce. The portion is always enough for two meals. But maybe you prefer chicken or veal. Chicken Macadamia is a boneless breast of chicken with a crust of toasted macadamia nuts, topped with a light raspberry sauce. My husband frequently orders this dish, and loves it. Veal Portabella contains veal slices sauteed with portabella mushrooms, artichoke hearts, and a Marsala wine sauce. This is one of my favorites. If beef is your thing, they have Ribeye, Skirt Steak (topped with onions and peppers), NY Strip, and two sizes of Prime Rib. If you're more into seafood, there's a fish & chips platter containing a whole pound of fried whitefish, French fries, and cole slaw. There are scallops which can be grilled or broiled, shrimp served fried or broiled, and baked salmon with a cheese crust. There are always daily specials, and everything I've tried is always wonderful. The entrees range from $13 to $25. All are served with fresh bread, and soup or salad.
Sunday Brunch
For $17.95 you get a brunch that has, pretty much everything you'd expect to find on a Sunday brunch. Of course, there are all of your basic breakfast items including omelets, cereals, French toast, and fresh fruit. But there's also peel & eat shrimp, various cheeses, salads, and carved meats. It's not for every Sunday, but when you want to have a nice treat, or for celebrating a special day, it's a lovely meal.
Overall
McDivot's is a great place. With their quiet atmosphere, views of the beautiful country club, superb service, and reasonable prices, it's on my list of favorite places when I want to be just a little bit fancy.
