Pros:How do they move all those glasses at once? Good burgers and great beer
Cons:Smallish and smokey
The Bottom Line: For a real turn-of-the-century experience, try the oldest beer house in NYC -- McSorley's. Great beer and a great place to hang out in.

Let's put it this way.

Don't go to McSorley's if you're not looking to have a few pints of beer. You won't last too long there if that's the case anyway...if you don't drink, you've gotta leave.
McSorley's is the classic old Irish Ale House of the 1900's still alive today in the East Village. It's a tiny place, nestled into the busy city, but once you step in, you can see how turn of the century NY must have been. Sawdust on the plank floor, heavy smoke in the air, and crusty old bartenders scurrying everywhere. The atmosphere is one reason to go here. But it's not the only reason.

Reason 1: How do they do that?
If you've ever been to McSorley's, the one thing you'll remember is that the bartender comes to your table with a round of beers. Because the glass mugs are relatively small, he brings two drinks per person. And sometimes he brings four. And he does it all at one time. All the bartenders have learned a secret way to carry up to 24 of the mugs to the tables...I have no idea how they do it. You have to see it to believe it.

Reason 2: The Beer
If you like beer, you'll enjoy McSorley's. They make their own beer -- just two versions -- light and dark. They may not be much for variety, but both malts have a smooth finish and are great drinking beers. You can drink them with the bar food that Mc Sorley's has. I recommend the hamburgers and especially the pretzels!

Reason 3: The Company
Anytime you go to McSorley's, go in a group. It's a great time for friends who want to hang out! Try it.

Reason 4: (Only Applicable for Men) The Bathrooms
The men's bathroom at Mc Sorley's is straight from the 1900's. The urinals are at least 6 ft high and the sinks are vintage antiques. I'm not sure what the women's room looks like, but I can bet it's not a traditional "powder room"!

McSorley's Old Ale House is not for the young or those older than 60. It gets really crowded and as I said, you are asked to keep drinking or you MUST leave. The waiter/bartenders seriously monitor your intake to make sure that you get pretty drunk while you're there. There's usually a 30-45 minute wait outside, but the line moves fairly quickly.
