Pros:18 thumbs up from Osage County First Grade
The Bottom Line: Each triple line includes a solid blue top line, a slotted blue center line, and the solid red bottom line.
Mead Composition Book Special Ruled 9 3/4"x7 1/2" is the journal notebook Osage County First Grade uses on a daily basis for everything from copy work, writing spelling words, vowel and consonant practice, directed penmanship writing, dictation, grammar work, and many other journaling or writing needs we might have.
Because writing is half of Language Arts Literacy it is most important that students develop legible penmanship and writing-grammar skills they will need throughout their educational years and extending into life careers and experience.
In each Mead Special Rule Primary Composition Book journal there are 100 double sided sheets providing 200 writing pages, Osage County First Grade uses two each term. The journals are available from Amazon, however, the ones we use in Osage County First Grade were purchased at WalMart.
I particularly like the red line cueing Little People this is where to sit the letter on the baseline. Pages include a top margin for picture drawing. We do not draw on every single page, but sentence writing and story writing does entail illustrating the sentences or the story.
The lined portion of the Mead Special Rule Primary Composition Book page includes seven triple lines for producing seven lines of print. Each triple line includes a solid blue top line, a slotted blue center line, and the solid red bottom line.
For vowel and consonant work, much dictation and spelling work we draw a line down the center of the lined portion to create space for writing fourteen words.
The sturdy Mead Special Rule Primary Composition Book cover holds up well for a half year of heavy usage by somewhat awkward Little People. I like the manuscript alphabet shown just inside the front cover. The letters on the chart are grey, shown on the triple blue, slotted blue, red lines as are the writing pages; making it easier for Little People to refer to the chart if help is needed.
As a rule one or two Little People have problems with pencil control and letter writing even to the middle of the school term. Parents can refer to the chart over Christmas holiday as they help there child perfect there penmanship acuity.
Below the manuscript chart Mead includes three small boxes of Helpful Hints: paper stabilization is achieved when the helper hand is used to hold the paper during writing, pencil grasp is shown in an illustration along with written verbiage parents can refer to: move only our fingers when writing, drawing and coloring, it is not necessary to swing the whole hand or arm, and posture is discussed and illustrated.
I find the Mead Special Rule Primary Composition Book cover to be very heavy-duty having sewn binding using a sturdy cord to keep pages locked in place. A durable tape protects the left side of the closed binding. Writing lines conform to the Zaner-Bloser method which may be or closely resembles the old Noble and Noble method, and is the one I use for teaching penmanship.
Excellent, durable journal for Primary use. Happy to recommend.
