Pros: Reusable each term, fits backpack or desk, items can be moved around inside, very durable
Cons: Rings have to be open individually, sometimes supplied paper can rip
The Bottom Line: If you are a student, get it! They are popular and can be hard to find, so when Back to School supplies are out, get them right away.

| diamonddragon's Full Review: Mead Five Star Flex Hybrid Note Binder 29104 - Lar... |
I am an adult college student in my early 30s who takes 2 classes at a time at an urban commuter school. I started using these a couple of years ago. I always had the dilemma of whether to use a binder or spiral notebook. Spirals are good for taking notes on small classroom desks when your notebook takes up the entire desk but you can't move the notes around or let someone copy your notes for a few minutes without ripping them all out or giving up your entire notebook. A binder is good when you have a lot of handouts but it's hard to write on the backsides of the notebook paper without taking it out and they are bulky, big and can get heavy.
The Five Star Flex is the best of both worlds. Most fit about what would fit in a 1in binder. Recently they came out with an XL version which is supposed to hold "more than a 1 1/2in binder" so I got that for the class I take more notes for. They are like a spiral because they are about the same size and thickness so they fit well in a backpack and can be folded over on a desk to take notes. Everything-the rings, covers, pockets, etc are durable rip resistant plastic. I use one for each class.
But they are like a binder because you can move notes around in them and insert a syllabus, handout or anything else you can 3-hole punch or slip in one of the pockets.
It can rip the traditional paper that comes with it, so I replace it with reinforced notebook paper that I buy separately. The paper is more expensive but I use both sides of every sheet and stock up on it at the beginning of the year when it is on sale. I then only throw away paper I used at the end of the term and keep the clean sheets in the notebinder for the next semester. I put some of the paper it comes with in one of the pockets and use it for "looseleaf" in case a teacher wants us to do something in class to hand in or someone needs an attendance sheet started or something like that.
Even though the notebinders are more expensive that most spiral notebooks(around $10 a piece), you can also use them one semester after the next by taking out all the paper and notes once the class ends and putting in fresh paper. You can even just keep in the paper you didn't use and only get rid of what you did, which is an environmental plus. No more throwing out an entire spiral that may only be half full of notes at the end of the semester!
