Over the years I have viewed through refractors, reflectors (Newtonian), Schmidt Cassegrain and Maksutov telescopes.
Basically, it comes down to this: The job of a telescope is to gather light. The larger the diameter, the more light; smaller the diameter, less light. The only differences I have seen in the different types of telescopes are: Refractors have more contrast and no diffraction spikes, Newtonians have diffraction spikes.
I have looked at the same object on the same night using all the different types of telescopes and generally the largest telescope (usually a Newtonian) gave the best view.
No matter what Astro Physics says, the view of through a 20" Newtonian will show more detail than a 9" refractor.

I would have liked to have heard your thoughts on details of plants and galaxies as seen through the cassegrain versus the reflectors.
