For those of you that don't know, my twins, Charles Henry and Catherine Elisabeth, were born on March 14, 2008. They were a little under 7 weeks early. Right now, they are still in the NICU, but are doing well. I'm doing well, too. The whole story is for another time, when I can wrap my head around the babies being here and everything that happened. To keep my mind off it, though, I have decided to start reviewing the different items that I am using with my body and the twins.
For Christmas 2007, my husband and I talked about gifts we wanted. I told him that I didn't want clothes or jewelry or anything like that. What I really wanted was the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump. After all, I was expecting twins that I fully intended on breastfeeding, and this specific pump was $319 at Babies R Us. Craig didn't want to get me a practical gift for Christmas, but I insisted and he did.
First off, Craig found this pump for $250 somewhere online. He told me how much it was because he saved so much money. He even wen so far as to say that Babies R Us is a rip-off when it comes to breastfeeding supplies. From what I was told by a Medela representative, this item is going to be discontinued so that a less expensive pump can grace the market. Honestly, I don't care what this pump costs. It is fabulous, and I couldn't imagine using any other. Unfortunately, I had to use the hospital breast pump by Ameda, which felt like a vacuum on my breasts. It makes me love my Medela that much more.
With the Pump in Style Advanced, consumers have a choice of three different bags: the Shoulder Bag, the Backpack and the Metro Bag. I have the Shoulder Bag, which I love. It is absolutely gorgeous. This bag only comes in black, as do the other Medela Pump in Style Advanced models. The Shoulder bag has several different compartments and pockets: one for the pump with a space next to it for either the power adapter or battery adapter, a shallow side pocket for paperwork and such, two pockets on the short end of the bag for your cellphone and such, and the main zippered part of the bag, which is compartmentalized with different dividers. It is very easy to find yourself getting organized with this bag. I am a very disorganized person, and I love how easy it is to find everything that I need in order to pump.
The Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump (Shoulder Bag) comes with many different accessories. When you purchase this pump, you don't just get a breast pump - you get a complete breast pumping kit. The bag includes two pumps to attach to the pumping machine, two hoses, battery pack (8 AA batteries not included), removable cooler carrier, 4 collection containers and lids, sample of Medela nursing Cream, sample of Medela Personal Fit Breast Shields, sample of Medela Breastmilk Storage Bags, reusable cooling element, instructions, Breastfeeding Information Guide and, of course, the pumping machine itself.
As mentioned before, the Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump emulates nursing with your baby. There are two different speeds on this pump. The first speed is the short, rapid "sucks", which is what your baby does to stimulate the milk flow once they are properly latched on. This setting also "Simulates your baby's initial rapid suckling to initiate faster milk flow." The second setting is the slower, deeper "sucking" for stronger milk let-down. This setting is where you get the most bilk, because it "Simulates your baby's slower, deeper suckling for maximum milk flow in less time." What is really great about the two different settings is that they work together so that you can produce more milk for your infant.
The knob control allows you to regulate the intensity of the pump. When you first start pumping, you will automatically start in the rapid setting. After two minutes, the slow setting takes over. If you would like to start the slow setting sooner, you can simply press a button to switch over. Basically, you can customize this breast pump to your needs during each use.
There are also other accessories that you can purchase with this pump, such as a car lighter adapter. They are not included, but may be worth it for the super-busy mother.
I have problems nursing Catherine, as she had an NG tube in the NICU for over a week. Once the NICU started nippling with her, everyone was worried that she wasn't getting enough to eat. So, she had to take a bottle to monitor exactly how much she was getting. I didn't want her on formula, so I had to pump regularly so that she had enough to eat. The Medela Pump in Style Advanced allows me to pump anytime, anywhere. I pump for Catie and I nurse Charlie. The Medela Pump in Style Advanced allows me to pump quickly, so that my twins aren't far apart in their feedings.
The Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump is an excellent pump for anyone that is currently or aspiring to breastfeed, especially parents of multiples.
