Pros:Gel formulation is a great theory.
Cons:Didn't work, Price, Must be used 3 times or more everyday.
The Bottom Line: After using Mederma for 2 years I saw no improvement in the texture of my scar.
When I was in my teens I had a minor hair transplant to correct a condition called traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is where a small area of ones scalp has temporarily/permanently lost hair due to various harsh hairstyles (damn those 1980s hairstyles). After the procedure everything had turned out great, however I was left with a relatively large keloid scar on the back of my head (where the hair was removed to be re-transplanted). While this scar could not be seen due to the fact that I had long hair, it was annoying to feel the raised scar when brushing my hair and was even more annoying explaining how I got the scar to every hairstylist who asked. After consulting with my Physician I was recommended Mederma skin care for scars. So how did my scar look 2 years after using Mederma; read on.

Mederma is a skin care product formulated with Cepalin (onion extract) that is used for the treatment of both new and old scars (both children and adults can use this product). Mederma is not a scar preventative, so it should not be used on open wounds to help scars from forming. Mederma can be used on all types of existing scars, including scars resulting from surgery, burns, stretch marks, injuries, and even acne. Mederma claims that that their product will make these types of scars appear both softer and smoother.
Mederma comes in the form a very light and pleasant smelling gel. The product is a breeze to apply, however it needs to be applied 3-4 times a day, so if you plan on going out on the town you better also plan on taking along the Mederma. Mederma is available in 2 sizes; a 0.7 oz. tube and a 1.76 oz. tube. When using the 1.76 oz. tube I can usually make it last about 1 month on my 4" scar, which makes me wonder just how many bottles would be needed each month for large areas of scar tissue.
I started using Mederma about 2 years after my surgery, so my scar would be categorized as an old scar. Mederma claims that new scars should appear softer and smoother within 8 weeks of use and up to 6 months for older scars. I had used this product 4 times each day (once in the morning, twice during the day, and once at night) and never once noticed an improvement with either the texture or the color of my keloid scar; even after 2 full years of use.
Other than the keloid scar on the back of my head I had also used Mederma for old fry grease scars that I had on my hands from working at fast food restaurants when I was a teen. Mederma also proved to be ineffective in helping even these types of relatively minor scars.
So, do I like anything about Mederma? Well, I'm not going to tack on any bonus stars for this, but the product is absolutely greaseless, dries clear, and the smell is almost nonexistent; definitely a plus. Mederma also dries very fast and washes completely off the body with just a mild soap. I have used almost every non prescription scar treatment on the market and have found that Mederma is probably the easiest to use. The fact that Mederma can be used almost anywhere on the body (including the face) is something that just can't be said about many products on the market i.e. Johnson & Johnson's Scar Healing.
Any adverse reactions?
I have extremely sensitive skin, so avoiding a harsh product was a very big issue for me. When I first started using Mederma I did develop a slight rash around my scar, however this minor rash only lasted for the first couple weeks of treatment. Other than the minor rash when first using Mederma I had no further problems with allergic reactions.
Note: Mederma can be used in conjunction with other scar creams.
After using Mederma for almost 2 full years without any noticeable improvements with my scars I did come across a product called Kelo-Cote. Kelo-Cote is also a product for scars, however it is greasy and is hard pressed to dry even after 12 hours post treatment. Despite its negatives, Kelo-Cote combined with steroid injections has been the only product/procedures to help improve both the texture and lessen the redness of my keloid scar.
Water (purified), PEG-4, Onion (Allium Cepa) Extract, Xanthan Gum, Allantoin, Fragrance, Methylparaben, Sorbic Acid
Mederma in the 1.76 Oz. tube can be purchased at almost any major retail drugstore for about $30.00. If you are going to use Mederma for an extended period of time, I highly suggest shopping online (freshskincare.com) where you can find a three pack of Mederma (1.76Oz.) for less than $60.00; that is a huge savings.
I really had high hopes for Mederma. I had heard so many success stories about this product and really had hoped it would work for my scars. Unfortunately Mederma has been a waste of my money; well over $600. In conclusion, I do not recommend Mederma for the treatment of scars, although I do highly recommend reading the other reviews here at Epinions.com about Mederma. It is truly baffling to read about the diverse results people have had with this product.
