Mederma and me (Reply to this comment)
by kitdesigner
Had dog bite on face so began applying Mederma. Did a wonderful job on the healing BUT something odd happened. In applying I always rubbed the excess around entire cheek. After several days I noticed that the 'bag' under that eye (I am 51 yrs old) was significantly less obvious. Thought it was my imagination or swelling on that side. After about 1-1/2 weeks it became obvious - Mederma took the bag off that eye. Not a little noticeable, but obvious enough that a client mentioned it to me! Have since been applying to both cheeks and am starting to even out my face. No effect on any wrinkles, just got rid of the bag. Amazing and not my imagination. Does anyone know if I can continue using long term? Is it safe for that? Will the bag come back if I stop??? Has anyone else had similar experience? Again, this is not placebo because I never even thought about it, not my imagination because a client mentioned to me it was that obvious. Curious what others have to say, but for now I'm continuing using on whole face!!!

How nice of you to comment. I'm glad it worked for you. There are a lot of procedures out there. I was thinking about getting some sort of scar reversal done- with microdermabrasion or something. In the meantime some of these OTC products do actually work! jo

yes there is itchiness a little, my personal opinion from the experience of using it is I feel the tightness is caused just because its a gel, and when gel dries it tightens the skin as it dries. It feels just like a peelable face pack as it dries. The itchiness is mild and for me, worth it for the results, fantastic. Tried solely vitamin E topical oil for a year did nothing at all. Believe me I will try anything to look normal facially.
Before that I took 1000 units orally solely vit E for a year before that. Did good at healing my lesions faster but nothing for the scarring.
Then my wee miracle in a bottle, tried mederma just by chance using it on my son, couldnt afford specialist copayments now. Used it for a face he had after an accident. Put it on his facial scar 3 times a day after it healed and stitches were out. Its almost undectectable visually after the 4 months of using it on him he said its fine now I dont need it. During use on his fresh scar it did remain visually more reddened permanently after application but once the skin smoothed down flat the redness totally disappeared once he stopped using it. ( His eyebrow/lid was hanging inside out when the accident happened).
It worked on me, I decided to try it, I thought it was too cheap to be true before he used it,20 years of severe scars facially from acne cysts/lesions scarring, it is slowly smoothing and visually disappearing with no make up on. My scarring is smoother and less obvious and can still be seen with makeup on but much less than 4 months ago. 20 years of dermatologists and specialists, here in USA a fortune in medication and copayments, specialists could do nothing from uk to usa now MEDERMA. Its working!!!
The peeling I get too is not skin but the residual from the gel applied topically on skin. Needs to be used at night because cannot leave it on under makeup it peels and makes you look like your skin is peeling off.
I love it and compared to how painful I have been advised from specialist and expensive cosmetic surgery is, its not expensive at all compared to surgery and it works like a miracle. It is worth the try. My sons scar is almost invisible and my whole face was deep holed scarred from cysts. Literrally looked like someone had pierced my face with a sharp pencil.
Once a day is all I use it for because I always wear foundation in public, it peels because of the residual gel dried. I couldnt afford the cost of 3 times a day anyway even if I didnt wear makeup.
I recommend this personally is undoing years of being made fun of, people staring making comments, I tried to hide my scarred face. Noy now.Wow!!! Its only been 4 months of once a day so you can see flat circles from the scars but its getting flatter and smoother all the time. It does redden my face too when I use it, probably just the ingredients soaking in and your skin reacting. I have super sensitive skin. By morning the reddness is gone and no-one sees me in the dark.
Definately worth a shot before dermabrasion. Im going to keep at it once a day until I can get my face normal enough to go swimming with my kids and not get a reaction at the sight of my skin. My son saw me with my makeup off for the first time since I started using it and he said its amazing the difference my skin is almost completely smooth. I had dents!!!!!

Thanks for the info, but you did not mention that when applied, your skin starts to get itchy!! OK, is not something I cannot tolerate, it makes you feel like "humm.. this thing is actually *doing* something on my skin"

I saw a commercial for this stuff recently & was about to go out and buy it and then I thought, "I'm going to check out what the Epinioners thought!"
I'm glad I did... your review was excellent. You answered quite a few of my questions, and even though I have mega-sensitive skin, I'm gonna try this... I'll probably start with scars that aren't on my face though - just to make sure I don't have a bad reaction.
Thanks much for your thoroughness - it's quite appreciated. :-)

Very informative too....thank you so much.
I think I might give this a try...
Heck, I'd rub an angry porcupine across my stomach if I thought it would get rid of my pregnancy stretchmarks......*sigh*

I do know - I take the non pure form in the form of a vitamin. I did buy pure E - d alpha...in a roller tube. 38 fluid ounces cost me less than $5.00 which sounds like a lot but it would last for a long time if I used it. I bought it at my local health food store. jo..

Just so you... (Reply to this comment)

..know...
Therea are three types of Vitamin E. Only one of them is the best for scar healing.
Mixed Tocopherols- very weak. Usually gives just a little result.
DL-Alpha Tocopherol is a synthetic Vitamin E- the most commonly available version and virtually useless for the true work of this vitamin
PURE D-Alpha Tocopherol is the only vitamin E that is truly worth using. However, it is incresingly hard to find and is VERY EXPENSIVE.
That study to which you referred did not tell what kind of Vitamin E (at least in your review) that they used. Oftentimes they use synthetic thinking that it is the pure natural, but it is not.
Great review,!

When my middle son was a baby, he had surgery done on a sensitive part of his face. We used Mederma Scar Cream religiously during the healing process and the outcome was amazing. We had a wonderful experience with Mederma.
Great review,
