Pros:Ink erases completely, eraser don’t rip up loose leaf paper, dark ink.
Cons:The erasers die before the ink does.
The Bottom Line: If you like writing in ink but make tons of mistakes, give these a try.

I can vividly recall the first time someone brought an erasable pen to school; judging by the way everyone reacted you would have thought that he reinvented the wheel. Until a few years ago erasable ink pens were the brunt of many jokes amongst office supply junkies. The ink was often light or smudged easily and the erasers were so coarse that they would rip through the paper; sure that was one was to get rid of the mistake but it also meant that you had to start over. The worst case scenario was the you would end up with a hole in your paper if you tried to erase something and that did nothing but give your teacher good reason to ask you what the mistake was in the first place that you felt the need to gouge it from the paper. PaperMate did reinvent the wheel, well, in this case the legacy of erasable ink. The whole Eraser Mate series is filled with pens that have a true erasable ink, some with rubber comfort grips, others without. Being someone that chooses black ink 90% of the time, I was really curious to see if the kudos that this pen received were warranted.
PaperMate Eraser Mate Black Ink Medium Point Pen
Most of the complaints about erasable ink is that it isnt dark enough; this isnt the darkest black that I have seen but for an erasable, it isnt bad at all. Smudging isnt really an issue thanks to a reformulation in the ink but if you are erasing words there is always a chance that you will over erase an area and wipe out stuff by mistake. If you are looking for the absolute best erasable black ink pen go with the Scripto, the erasers are a little bit smaller but they write perfectly. The PaperMate Eraser Mate is a nice choice if you want something in your home or office that you can use for a long period of time, writes consistently and doesnt cost a lot of money. The down side to the low price is that there is no rubber comfort grip area to it and it isnt retractable; that means that you have to worry about losing the cap [and the eraser] or it not getting recapped and ink getting all over the place. Just because the ink is erasable doesnt mean that it doesnt make a complete mess.
The brood like to use these when they are working on projects, especially if they are doing a lot of documentation for experiments. They can erase things easily so if they have to change numbers or the order of things on a piece of paper they can do it without smudging, one of their number one complaints about using pencils for their projects. PaperMate does sell refills for the erasers but you have to make sure that you are buying the correct ones; the pencil eraser refills are usually pink where these are white or gray. You can use a pencil eraser for getting rid of the ink but after a while the ink does start to build up on it and it needs to be cleaned. The boys used these all the time until I picked up a few packages of the Scripto erasable pens, after they tried those they decide to switch so I got stuck with a handful of these. Its not a big deal, I use them around the house or take them to the shop. The biggest thing you have to keep in mind about these pens is that you shouldnt use them for any type of documents that you consider essential or for signing papers. Since this is erasable ink it would be pretty easy for someone to omit what ever they want from something and if you dont have photocopies to back things up, you could find yourself getting screwed.
I started out buying the three packs of these at Wal-Mart for $1.39 each but when the brood starting using more of them I opted to get a twelve pack at Staples for about $3.50. These are a nice pick if you like having the ability to erase ink completely without ruining the paper and you do get a smooth write from them. You can also opt to get a multi color pack for about $1.50, you get a red, blue and black medium pen in each pack. These are not refillable so if you lose them or they get destroyed its not that big of a deal to pick up another pack. If you ever have any problems with PaperMate products they have a great customer service team that will assist you in getting a replacement or refund of a defective or unsatisfactory product.
The Bottom Line
As I said, The Scripto ones are better than these but for the price of the Eraser Mate, you cant go wrong. The metal roller ball lets you write on almost any type of paper without skipping and so far I havent had any major problems with the ink spitting or clumping up on paper. These are a nice pick for kids who are practicing their cursive writing; while most people would say that pencil is best, if you are doing a lot of erasing it is very easy to smudge the lead on the paper making what is already written a complete garbled mess. I wish the eraser refills were easier to find but you can use a regular eraser in a pinch. My skin still crawls when I have to use those harsh gray ink erasers, Ive never had much luck with them and I usually end up ripping or wrinkling the paper while I am trying to use them. If its an erasable ink you are looking for but you dont want to spend a lot of money for them, the Eraser Mate is definitely something worth checking out.
As always, thanks for the read!
