Pros: basic toy design with a popular character
My sons are 17 months apart. Some days it seems like they are twins, and other times, the 17 months seems like years. Such was the case when my younger son, Bug, was still a baby. Big brother loved Buzz Lightyear, and so he did too, but the problem was that most of the Buzz toys we had were either too big or too much of a choking hazard to let him play with. When we found the Mega Bloks Buzz Lightyear Buildable Spaceship, we thought it was an ideal toy: designed for little hands, but featuring the character he loved just like his big brother.
::: A Bunch of Bloks :::
The Mega Bloks Buzz Lightyear Buildable Spaceship comes with (technically) 27 pieces: a large lime-green and white ship base, two black wheels, a smaller purple ship base, three white ship pieces (one nose cone and two "compartments" that are interchangeable), a tail fin piece, a lime green satellite dish, 2 figures (Buzz Lightyear and an LGM), and assorted Mega Bloks in different sizes and colors (blue, purple, orange, green, and red).
All the pieces can be stored back in the cardboard box, which shows different configurations for building Buzz's ship (or a space station, smaller ship, etc.) Assembly is as simple as popping the wheels onto the base and applying the stickers to the pieces according to the enclosed directions.
::: A Few Disappointments, But Worth It :::
The biggest problem that my boys had with this set was that you couldn't really have two ships built at the same time. There is only one nose cone type of piece, so if you have it on the smaller spaceship, the larger one isn't going to look like a spaceship at all. Aside from that, however, this set is constantly in demand.
It spent a bit of time at our house, and then went over to my mother's for the boys to have something "new" there since the majority of the toys at my mother's are either hand-me-downs from my childhood or friends. Without fail, this set gets pulled out EVERY time we are there, even if we visit several days in a row.
With all the electronic toys out there, it's easy to forget that kids often like the simple things: building, spaceships, and things that roll. Mixing that basic toy design with a popular figure just hit this toy out of the park for my kids, and I was shocked when I went hunting for it and discovered it isn't being sold anymore.
Of all the Toy Story themed toys my boys have accumulated over the years, the Mega Bloks Buzz Lightyear Buildable Spaceship is by far their favorite. Even now that they have started to move on to toys with a slightly older theme to them, and the stickers are starting to show a bit of wear, this toy is still seeing regular use.
