My 4 year old daughter is big on pretend play and loves to play kitchen. She has been 'into' this type of play for as long as I can remember, well before she turned two. Over the years she has accumulated quite a collection of wooden play food sets - most of which are from Melissa and Doug. Her grandmother recently gave her this Wooden Slice and Bake Cookie Set which has been more of a hit than I ever imagined.
About the Wooden Slice and Bake Cookie Set From Melissa & Doug this playset is priced at $19.99, but as with anything can be found for less if you shop around. Melissa and Doug toys are often marked buy 1 and get another 1/2 price, which was the case when my mother picked this set up.

Like other Melissa and Doug sets it is sold in an open top crate style box. Unlike other M&D sets, the box is not wooden - instead it is cardboard. So it is not as durable for storage as other sets.
This playset is suggested for kids ages 3 and up.
Playtime! If you have ever purchased slice and bake cookies from the refrigerated section of the grocers, then you will get what I mean by cardboard cookie tube. The tube reminds me of Pillsbury Slice & Bake with the pop off top and all. Inside you stack all the cookies and even the toppings. The cookies have velcro on both sides of them so they stack up and stay stuck together. Your child can then use the play knife and slice the cookies apart. There is a very gratifying 'cut' sound when the wood separates the velcro and kids will want to do this over and over again.
Once the cookies are separated they can be arranged on the wooden cookie sheet which also has dime size velcro on it to hold the cookies in place. The cookies can be left plain or an additional 'frosting/topping' piece can be placed on top (also velcro). The toppings vary with 6 chocolate and 6 vanilla cookies with assorted sprinkles, etc. My daughter likes to arrange them with chocolate on one side of the tray and vanilla on the other - she seems to have made some rules about this, so I just go with it.
The cookies can be served using the play oven mitt and the spatula. When done - the cookies and toppings can be stored inside the cardboard tube or the whole cookie sheet can be put away with the cookies attached.
My daughter likes to play with this set and pretend to bake cookies from start to finish. She found that the steps for making the cookies were shown on the back on the box and so she figured it out right away with the slicing and baking. I don't often buy slice & bake cookies (due to my son's dietary restrictions) so my daughter didn't understand the connection between this toy and the cookie dough at the grocery store.
Durability-wise, this wooden toy is sturdy and meant to last. It is made with non-toxic paint and tested to be safe and lead-free. I have no doubts that this toy will outlast my daughter's interest in this type of pretend play. It will definitely be something that I can pass on to a friend or donate to a preschool program. The only piece that won't fair as well will be the cardboard cookie tube, which could be crushed pretty easily.
Overall, the Wooden Slice and Bake cookie set is yet another winner from Melissa and Doug. I absolutely recommend it for preschool age children who enjoy imaginary play.
