| adambrickman's Full Review: Memorex MC1008 Personal CD Player |
I got this shower CD player as a gift. I had been wanting a shower radio, and then realized how cool it would be to have a shower radio/CD player. However, I didn't want to pay $100 to get one. I thought this item would be the perfect fit. I was right...for about 4 hours.
You can see what the model looks like from the picture. Very attractive. I dig the blue. It *is* heavy, and this made me nervous to hang it from the showerhead. So instead I hung it from the towel rack, on the opposite end of the shower. It still swung precariously. If I hit a button, and the CD player tapped the shower tile, that caused a certain skip, followed by a pause as the player tried to recover.
The button placement is not a really big deal to me. I figure I'll eventually get used to however they are laid out. However, they really arranged them in a strange way, in my opinion. For instance, the skip forward button is placed just to the LEFT of the skip backward button. Annoying.
Personally, I found the radio reception to be just fine. It got all of the radio stations I expected it to. I have read other reviews that have complained of terrible reception, but I did not have this problem.
The light button that illuminates the clock when pressed was useless. It's about as bright as a christmas tree bulb on a string, except less so.
THE REAL PROBLEM IS THE BATTERY LIFE. The MC1008 takes six C batteries at a time, and I got AT MOST 4 hours of playing time before the batteries were completely drained. How is it that my discman can get 20+ hours off of 2 AA rechargable batteries, and this thing can't get 4 hours from six C batteries?? Absolutely incredible. I can't believe Memorex would sell something that dies so quickly. That simply has to be 100% terrible engineering. This flaw makes the MC1008 absolutely *worthless.* Who wants to spend about $5 for every four CD's they listen to?? I refuse to waste that many batteries.
Here are some other choice words I've found from other reviews on this item:
"This product is an embarrassment to the electronics industry. Sucks up batteries"
"Memorex has some cheek!"
"Very flimsy hooks to hang it to a shower rod....really, really nervy of them to provide what seem essentially like twisted paperclips, at best."
I wish I had read the reviews earlier.
STAY AWAY from this shower CD player. Perhaps a few of them work properly, but mine - and at least 25 others I've read about - is now filling up a landfill.
