Freak369's Full Review: Memorex MF2HD 3.5" PC-Formatted High Density Disks...
After having many battles with floppy disks I finally decided to throw out the ones that I was using and purchase new ones. I know, I know, floppy disks are so old school it isnt even funny. As much as I hate to admit it, I purchased CD-RWs and didnt have much luck when I tried to rewrite on them. The brood showed me how to do it but as usual, it went right over my head. Trying to find floppys these days is pretty hard - most places carry only the basic ones if they stock them at all. Wal-Mart only had two types of floppys, the Memorex Cool Disks and some other one that was for MACs. For about $3.75 I decided to try these out - they had a nice color assortment and I could finally have separate disks for Epinions categories. Before I threw out the old ones I had 20 - 30 reviews in various stages on each of the disks and it was getting hard to keep track of everything. Thanks to these I have dedicated disks for each category so it saves me a lot of time when I am looking for something.
Memorex MF2HD 3.5" PC-Formatted High Density Disks 10 Pack Floppy Disk Storage Media
I am not a technical person. I will say that up front. These disks will hold up to 1.44 MB of information - but to me that means nothing. I save everything in .txt format because I switch between my laptop and my desktop [when it isnt giving me problems]. The laptop has Works, the desktop has Word - the only way I can swap files between them is to save everything in text format. The one disk that has the most information on it has all my HTML codes on it - 29 files, 166KB of space used, 1.21 MB free space. I think that because everything is saved in the text format the files are really small; even though there could be pages and pages of information to each file in each folder, there is still a tremendous amount of room left on the disk. If you are storing things like music or pictures these do fill up quickly but if you are saving things like that then you are better off going with a jump drive or CD-RW.
Maybe its just me but when I save a file on these it takes about half the time as when I would save on one of the other ones. Maybe its because they are new, maybe the other ones were on their last leg - I cant say for sure. All I know is that I havent had any problems using them on the laptop, desktop, cyber cafe or at the library. These have the read only lock on the back of them in case you dont want something to be written over - a nice feature but something that I never use. These have a completely see through body to them with a plastic disk slide protector, the ones that I was using previously were metal. That really doesnt mean much but it does give it a nicer appearance. Another perk to this set of disks is that it comes in a clear plastic file case. Even though there are only ten disks in this set, the case will hold about 15 of them so if you have others that you are working with, you can toss them in this for safe keeping. As strange as it sounds, the case is a little hard to open and close - since it is completely clear you have a hard time telling which piece you have to hold on it when you are opening it. Regardless, the case is thick and sturdy and keeps my disks protected from dust and backpack gunk.
Colors
Sometimes its not enough to have color coded stickers to tell floppys apart. These have completely colored see through bodies so spotting the one you need is easy. The colors are nice and vibrant too. You get two each of the following colors: red, green, yellow / orange, blue and purple. The stickers that come with this assortment are so plain and boring that I was half tempted to not use them at all and write directly on the disks with a Sharpie marker. There are about six or seven lines that you can write on but the brownish purple color that they used for the Memorex logo looks completely tacky
Warranty
I always have to laugh when I see a warranty on a disposable camera or something like a floppy disk - they will replace it if it is defective [under normal use] but they wont be liable for anything that you have stored on it. The warranty is in place for the lifetime of the product so if you ever have any trouble with it, you can contact them to get a replacement. I am ultra paranoid so I tend to pitch disks when they start to take longer than usual to save something or give me any type of an error. I lost about five reviews one time because something corrupted the disk. Never again, the first sign of any trouble and I dump whatever is on the disk to the hard drive then make copies of it. It is nice to know that these are certified free of errors and the nice tag line that Memorex has ... Meets or exceeds all quality standards for the industry.
The Bottom Line
Since I use a lot of floppy disks I am planning on getting a few more packs of these to have on hand when I need them. Since these have a lifetime warranty against defects, if one of them should happen to die on me I plan on sending it back to Memorex to get a replacement. Since it is getting pretty hard to find floppys - let alone cool ones like this - I am going to grab a few more boxes on my next trip to Wal-Mart before everyone else with an archaic computer system beats me to it! For the price they are a great deal and the colored disks help me stay a little bit more organized. You can check out all the cool Memorex products at their official website at www.memorex.com
End Note: I had one hell of a hard time finding these in the database. When I was looking for Memorex Cool Disks the only thing that came up were the CDs but rest assured, these are available in the floppy format as well! If I hadnt searched using the Memorex product number, chances are I would have never found these.
