C. G. Jung by Himself (or what should be)

Written: Nov 06 '00
Pros:It gives a rich internal atmosphere, explained into some detail, about how Jung developed his work and his theory.
Cons:It can`t be considered as a definitive biographical work on Jung, but it is still a must for someone who wishes to know about somebody who didn`t agree with autobiographical works!

Carl Gustav Jung, the great psychiatrist and psychologist, founder of the Analytical Psychology, reveals some internal details about himself in this book.

This book was intended to be an autobiographical work of Jung, in which engaged Aniella Jaffe, in order to offer to the world a vision of the life of this great scientist from his own eyes.

But Jung was never easy to convince, as Aniella tells us: after several attempts, Jung finally conveyed that he should give some details of what would be the history of his internal development. To Jung, it was much more important to understand the inner processes developing in the human soul. Any external behavior, fact or condition, would be just a faint reflex or indication of whatever was inside him, since, from his point-of-view, one cannot be completely truthful when writing about oneself.

At the same time, Jung had his own reasons to avoid putting many people of his social and scientific circle under jeopardy by revealing their intimate details on their relationships, and that was chiefly based on a strong sense of ethics.

Additionally, we should consider, when reading this book, that Jung did not took as his authorship by himself, since he did not write the entire book: parts of this work were written by Aniella Jaffe based on interviews and papers from Jung, and Jung frequently referred to his "Memories, Dreams, Reflections" as "Aniella Jaffe's Work."

Looking at this book, the sincere student of Analytical Psychology will understand some of the reasons that led Jung along his path, in which he sincerely alleged that his life and his work are the same and that any of his works are only a faint expression of what was the richness of his life, dedicated to the comprehension of the human soul in its smallest symbolic details.

People should read this work as the romance of a true story, in which not much details are given about external characters, but the lack of historicity is compensated by the richness of ideas which showed as a base for Jung`s texts comprehension, and it is intensively used by people who study Analytical Psychology.
